Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / giving up on fussy dogs??
- By ozzie72 [au] Date 19.01.04 01:22 UTC
I have 2 shih-tzu's who would have to be the most fussiest dogs in the world   They turn their noses up at ALL commercial foods,i have tried them all.The only things they really enjoy is green tripe, chicken, veg, pasta or rice or rabbit with veg pasta etc. i am forever trying to get them to eat different things but to no avail. would it be harmful to just feed them the above things?I know dogs need a wide variety of foods but i am just sick of throwing good food away,i am  banging my head against the wall  trying to please their fussy palates! They also get bones every second night and chicken wing tips daily, does all this sound like a balanced diet? Should i stop fighting them and just give in? I have done the leave food down for 20min. and then put it away, this lasted for 3 days with neither of them eating a thing,i gave in on the 3rd night.
They are both healthy and their weight is fine, the 11mth.old female weighs 7.3 kilo and my 3 year old F. is 5.6 kilo.

I would really appreciate your advice on this.

Thanks,

Christine (adelaide,australia)

Hi Christine, dogs do not require a variety of foods and what you are feeding seems fine, they may need a supplement, someone who feeds home made diet would have to help on that.

Hi Christine, they must be driving you mad! Tripe, chicken & rabbit with veg doesn`t sound too bad to me tho ;) :) and bones daily as well! What bones are you giving them besides the wing tips? The only thing I would add is fish & eggs or do they turn their noses up at that as well! Along with Vits E/C & a fish oil supp(not cod liver) & you should be fine. Remember it`s a balance over time so try not to worry :) Do you have Pitcairns book, his recipes are for raw meat but the rest is cooked, all recipes worked out for you & ingredients listed with nutritional values for nearlt everything :)

Christine, Spain.
