My new baby had his check up at the vets yesterday and the vet said he only had one testicle, the vet said not to worry he would see him again in four weeks time.  Should I be worried if he only has one or if he has one still stuck up and hasnt dropped?

Hi Eddie, would not worry till he is 9 months to a year old, time to decide then. Even if one is retained it will not cause any trouble for some years so there is time to deal with the problem after he is a year old.

Dont worry at the moment.  Puppys testicles do tend to go up and down.  Like jackie says wait untill he is at least a year and please don't let your vet push you into anything being done NOW!  Sometimes all vets think about is money. (Im not saying all vets will but there are some out there.

Thanks Jacki and Rox

The vet had me quite worried he did mention and operation but I was still in shock to take in what he said.  As he is only a pet only haven one doesnt bother me its not like he will be shown.  What sorts of problems could this cause, obviously if he was a show dog he couldnt be shown what other problems would this have caused if for example he was bought as a show dog?  (just asking as I am considering finding more about showing by attending some shows and finding a network of top breeders)  Thanks a bunch

Like the others have said Eddie, much to early to worry testicles can drop up until 10 months or so.

If it hasn't dropped by the time he is 12 months, then the main reason for concern is that the retained testicle does not keep cool outside the body as a normal testicle does, and can cause tumours to develop.  So most vets would advise removal at that time, if this is the case.

Lady D is right but forget it till you take him for his boosters, there is plenty of time to deal with the reticent testicle then if needed and it may well not be.

Hi Eddie,
If the retained one doesn't come down by the time he is 9 months to a year old, it would be wise for him to have it removed. Testicles are designed to be healthy at a lower temperature to the rest of the body, which is why they are outside the body cavity. If one stays inside, it will be at too high a tempereature, and is more likely to become cancerous in later years. The other one needn't be removed (unless you wish him to be totally castrated). A dog with only one testicle shouldn't be bred from (although he will be fertile from the 'normal testicle') because there is a strong hereditary tendency for this.

So there is no need to worry just yet.
Hope this helps.

Eddie,
Did you see Billy or Koo?
Koo seems to be a bit reticent as he is not sure what Billy would do. Jo is sometimes a bit reticent, not as much as Koo.
MY Bullmastiff only had one, Billy said wait, I wanted him done asap. Billy did him, under constraint, and had to search for the 'other' one. He still did a good job.
If your not worried about your other little one, she is a bitch isn't she?, then wait.
If you really want him 'seen to' then I would get him 'seen to'.
I still think that the vet, Billy or not, is the one to give the best advice.
I've just booked my little rescue in to have his leg and his bits removed.
Please pray for him everyone, he is being rehomed with my Parents.
