Hi all
Just wanted to thank everyone for all the advice ive had so far.  I`ve started taking Sam (13 wks) out for walks and he absolutely hates it!  He has a long flexi lead and i take plenty of treats with me and his favourite toy but I walk out of the house and he just sits there!!  We have loads of lovely fields for him to run around in but he just wont leave the front of the house!!  He also seems quite timid for a pup (so everyone tells me)
He started puppy classes with pamela mackinnon yesterday and he was quite shy at first but then got into it!!  Am I doing anything wrong?  we had sam for a week before we started work, and he is never alone for more than 4 hrs - he seems quite happy at home and playful - but the minute we go outside he starts crying.  I dont want to make this early walking traumatic for him :-( - any advice please?

Thanks loads
Jennymc

My Luke has been exactly the same, it's taken 2 weeks for him to get the hang of walking without going on a "sit-down strike"!! :) :) :). I followed the advice we were given at puppy class regarding ignoring him when the lead goes tight - which works whether he's in front or behind - and rewarding him as soon as the lead is loose - which means he has to walk towards me. After this I reward him when he's walking on a loose lead, and if he stops we repeat the process. We got right round the block today and he seemed to really enjoy it. So hang in there!

Hi,i'm new on here but exactly the same happened when my staffy Bailey was a pup, he just wouldn't go out the front door.He seemed to freeze when the door opened,i searched for a trainer who would come to my house to help.I was lucky to find a great trainer who sorted it out within a few days.the way it worked was to have the door open, and play with Bailey, give him lots of treats, keep him going over the doorstep and rewarding him with his favourite liver treats and generally building his confidence up.When we finaly had him going out into the front garden with no hassle there was no stopping him.He then went on to successfully complete his puppy course at scallywags school for dogs at 8 months old with the same trainer. Bailey is now 13 months and if i say so myself, the perfect dog!!!.  Pauly.....

I could help if you carry him away from the house and then set him down and walk back towards home. After a few times he might, with luck, find interesting smells etc. on the way and not be so eager to get back, thus leading to him evetually being willing to set off from the house to investigate all those lovely things he has learned are out there. You could also take a very very special toy which he only gets to play with away from the house.
