Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / nature diet, bad wind!
- By Lise [gb] Date 18.01.04 17:45 UTC
Hi there. I posted a message as a visitor a few days ago 'Burns Vs Nature Diet'.  Well Im gradually changing my puppy to nature diet and unfortunately its given him really smelly gas, which I have never even smelt before! Is it the change that may be causing this, or may the food always have this problem? Any advice appreciated! Thanks Lise

My friends dog is on ND & she's had the knickname "trumpet trousers" for a while - she is extremely windy. She comes to work & was stinking the office out! She changed her from the chicken & rice to the lamb variety & straight away.. no more trumpet trousers. It suits her ( & my nose) much better.

Just goes to show that our wee friends have things that suit and some that don't. Buddy was changed to ND Lite quite a while ago and his smelly trumps went away. Any food high in protein sets his intenstines into overdrive and he will stink the place out. The smell was digusting.

Your right budmag, some things suit some dogs. I'd have thought chicken & rice was a fairly safe bet for most, but evidently not for trumpet trousers! She was terrible, to the point we'd sit freezing in the office with all the windows wide open, but as soon as she was changed to lamb.... she was fine.

I did write on the notice board on Friday, "please stick to new diet for Trumpet & we'll all be happy next week"

My dog never has wind (cross fingers), but her poo goes loose with too much lamb.   I can't feed her ND lamb - which is a testiment to the quantity and quality of the lamb in the food.

(Okay, we had roast lamb last evening .. and she did get some .. and now I am picking up mush in the dog run.)

It could well be the change over. If she had a dickie tummy before it may be the adjustment to the new food. If it carries on the try another variety.

Min my oldie who is on Nature Diet Lite used to do songs with her farts before we changed over to ND but now does the occasional one :)

Hi... when we went from puppy to varieties ND had the same thing for 2 or 3 weeks. Then it disappeared, variety didn't make any difference. Even the smelly fish one heh ;). Have the occasional minor explosion but nothing like the first few weeks ;).

Hi, hes not as bad after a couple of days now on the food! With the Puppy ND we had no choice to which kind we had, as it is just one sort for the puppy diet.

He has been biting his back legs and his skin has been a tiny bit flaky, but no redness or sore bits.  We thought it may have been a food allergy so we did a gradual change to ND.  Hes still a bit itchy, but how long would it take for a change in food to affect his itchiness, if it was a food allergy previously?  We are heading to the vets today for worming and a check up.  Any ideas appreciated. thanks Lisa. (we have tried giving him a gentle bath, olive oil rubbed into the skin and the vet did his anal glands, but still no change...)

Skin problems caused by a food allergy can take several months to disappear entirely, assuming you have eliminated the cause of the allergic reaction.  Scratching at itchy skin and getting bacteria into the skin can cause problems of their own, so you might need something to calm the skin down (like a steriod) and stop the urge to itch.

What did your vet have to say?

The vet has said that she didnt know what it was on a few occassions, hence an appointment at a new vets next week! We are changing to non biological washing powder, and we will see what the vet says on wednesday. He is also being wormed when we go. Thanks for your help, lisa

I stopped using biological washing powder on his blankets/towels etc. Also advised not to use shack n vac or similar carpet products and Fribreeze is a definate no no now. Only times Buddy (Buddy) gets over itchy is late Aug through Sept when he frollicks in long grass, i usually end up with special shampoo from vets which does work for him.
Good Luck.

when we got  our puppy....we got him from blackpool  and the people we brought him from kept him on a diet of mixed tripe and god did he smell..the wind from him on the way home was so fowl...he had the runs and was relly really smelly. The people we brought him from said there was no problem with him on his food before so  we should keep him on what he has been raised on ... we changed his diet  I put him on to chappie...............and his wind problem is no more
