Hi
Since the wet weather began, I've had to go dog walking in wellies as it's very boggy around here. Usually I prefer walking boots! The problem is, I hate wellies as they don't support my feet. Can anyone recommend wellies with a wide leg. If I wear my wellies with tights (in the shop trying on :D) They fit OK. BUT when wearing them with two pairs of socks and my jeans tucked in they are too tight. I have slit my current wellies down the back to give me more 'calf' room. Has anyone else got wellie probs and more importantly a solution. I found some adjustable topped wellies but they were even narrower

Personally i don't like wellies as they are too clumsy for me lol, i use walking boots with thick walking socks that i tuck my jeans into at the bottom.
I used to have a pair of green wellies that i used when mucking out and they were very wide, they still sell them at horse supply stores (I'm sure they had a little strap at the top so you could adjust them a little around your leg).

Just had a quick search and they are hunter wellies there are loads on ebay. I found them to be quite wide! :)

I wear 'Muckers' - they have rubberised uppers and one piece soles (like wellies kind of, up to the ankle area) and either lace up or velcro round the ankle. There are a variety of different names by different makes - Loveson do them as well as many other equestrian boot manf.

Hunter do a wider calf variety called Huntress.  I have quite wide calves and I adore my Aigles.  My feet are always cosy and warm and the grip is excellent.  I also have walking boots (Aigle again) and wax gaiters.  They are great for marching through the bracken and undergrowth.  There is a website called The Welly Shop who have a terrific selection of boots on line.

Still like my Hunter Neo Classic's. Comfortable for a day in the field and with the neoprene lining warm enough to stand around in frozen standing water.

Best wishes, John

I have a pair of Le Chameau and they are so comfortable, easily take the dogs out for a long walk in them but  even more comfortable is the pair of leather walking boots I've just got (Hi-Tec) and very waterproof too if you look after them.

I wear muckers too, they're great.

Mine have got fur-like stuff inside them and they're lovely and snuggly.

They're good because unlike wellies, i find they give quite good ankle support.

If I remember rightly mine were quite expensive, but they've lasted absolutely ages, and I wear them all the time.

Although Le Chameau's are a bit pricey, they are so comfy!  If you get the leather ones your feet stay comfortable all day and are well supported.  Also they are zipped at the side and so provide a better fit.  Just get a size bigger if you want to wear lots of socks.

Once worn, you won't ever go back to Hunters.

I find with the leather lined Le Chameau you don't need extra socks anyway.

Why not get yourself a pair of gaiters to go with the walking boots? Like you I prefer the support from boots and have an ancient set of Barbour gaiters that keep the muck off as well as wellies would.

You're quite right Isabel.  I just wear a good quality woollen sock.  I am usually the only person at my son's football matches that doesn't have freezing cold feet!

I wear muck boots from the muck boot company, they are made of neoprene in the leg and stretch also they are much warmer than wellies, cheaper than hunters and I can stand around all day in them with nothing on my feet other than tights and my feet are warm as toast.  I would never go back to wellies again; around £38

Hi
I tried gaiters (cost me a fortune) the trouble is they are OK for the wet but the mud squidges up inside :)

Hi there!
I have large calves and have a similar problem. I couldn't find a wellie that was wide enough for me and not too expensive. In the end, I just took a pair of scissors to the wellies and cut the top bit off!  In order to keep my feet warm, I put a warm fleecy insole in them.  If you want support for your feet as you would in proper hiking boots, you can buy arch supports from most reputable sports shops. They fit into any shoe, trainer or wellie and give your foot better support and are excellent for people with weak arches.  Hope you can find something that not only fits your budget but also does the right job for you.
