I have 2 cats called Caspar (14) and Treacle (8) as well as Thistle my lab (2 and a half). I've had them all since they were 8 weeks old and all get on fine. All were toilet trained with no probs.
My problem is that since yesterday Treacle has started weeing in the house, she's never done it before, the cats have a cat door and come and go as they please, and toilet outside. Treacle is well and happy and eating and drinking fine. She's weed about 10 times in the house since yesterday morning. She did it in the bathroom where my cleaning lady was doing the bathroom, using bleach, I'm sure it's connected with the bleach. Now she's done it in other rooms too, maybe because I've kept her out of the bathroom. Would it be better to let her in there, at least it's a vynil floor. Should I tell her off?
Can anyone help me it's driving me mad, it's so out of character.

Sounds like she may have a urine infection ..10 times seems an awful lot of peeing !

Could there be a new cat in the neighbourhood? That can make some cats anxious about going out and/or cause them to scent mark. Please don't tell her off. Poor girl will feel more anxious and if it is an infection that would be unfair. I'd be inclined to provide her with a litter tray indoors until you can find out what the problem is.

Hi Jane,
It could well be a urine infection as Melody said, although it's just as likely that there is a new cat in the area that's upsetting her, as Sally said.
There is another thing....you mentioned the cleaning lady was using bleach? Well bleach contains ammonia (thats the reason you should never clean cat wee up with bleach) it makes the smell of cat wee (also ammonia) even stronger. It probably unlikely, but I suppose your cat could be being territorial and trying to cover up the ammonia smell with her own urine? Just a thought.
It's worth getting the vet to check your cat over though, as a urine infection does sound more likely.
Take care and good luck.

To the vets please. My previous cat Max had a thing all of a sudden about poohing in the house, here there and everywhere. He seemed perfectly healthy and just seemed to be doing it because he could. He had a cat flap and a tray inside but preferred to go behind the TV, under the bed etc. I took him to the vet and he had some kind of bowel infection which they treated right away and it stopped immediately. Had to get a new carpet though!! Animals doing something out of character, I always see the vet as I'm no expert and 9 times out of 10 its beneficial.

Thanks for your advice. I'm stopping being cross with her as now she's sulking under one of the beds so I think she's a bit confused. I'll try the litter tray thing and take her to the vets next week. thanks for all your help.

Thank you all for your help.
I took Treacle to the vet and she has (best case senario) cystitis or bladder stones or (worst case senario) a tumour in her bladder.
I have given her a litter tray in the house which she is now using instead of the carpet. Of course now I feel a massive heel for being cross with her and not taking her to the vets sooner.
Anyone else had a cat with cystitis?
Vet said that unlike in humans and dogs it's usually sterile in cats ie not caused by bacteria and they're not sure why it's so common.
Any input gratefuuly received

Sorry to hear Thistle has cystitis...but pleased you know what it is.
I don't know anything about how to treat/help but suggest you try a yahoo group I am sure there will be one for owners of cats who suffer with cystitis.
