My 7 year old male german shepherd has recently started to intermittently drip blood from his penis.
The symptoms started about 6 weeks ago when he peed in the house during the day x3 unwitnessed by myself just thought he had been desperate to go while i was in and out during the day. No blood visible.
Since this on three different occassions has noticed penny sized spots of blood on kitchen floor probably about every 2-3 weeks.
whilst having a look underneath noticed blood stained fluid coming from penis area.
He does not appear unwell full of life , no urgency or straining to pass urine and not noticed any blood when he passes urine just this dripping.
doesnt appear uncomfortable in any way quite happy to have his tummy rubbed.
any ideas.
Its happened again tonight so have decided to take him to the vets on friday unless he becomes unwell in the meantime.

Id get him looked at. it doesnt sound like a cystitis, as thre is no straining or urgenct to pee. It could be a prostate problem..is he castrated?
Malignant prostate cancer is very rare, so no need to panic, but benign enlargement of the prostate is more common, particually in the entire dog.
One other possibility could be bladder stones, but again the symtoms dont quite fit...
Id also take a pee sample with youto the vets so they have a little extra to work with!

Agree somewhere in his system he has a problem, most likely an infection but it needs dealing with and sooner rather than later.

Thanks for the replies.
In answer to the question he isnt castrated does it make any difference then on the possible causes?
On returning from work tonight he has continued with the spotting, evidence on the kitchen floor, probably about half dozen penny sized spots.
Is there any easy way to catch a urine specimen?or just right place at the right time :)

lol, no real easy way of getting a sample, you just have to hang about till he cocks his leg! use a large container to get the sample initially, then transfer it to a smaller clean jar or bottle! A cat litter tray can be useful!
The fact he is not castrated could be a factor, as he may have an enlarged prostate. But Id see what the vet says. I expect they may want him in for x-rays so they can get a better idea of what is going on. When you take him in, make sure its in the morning, and he is unfed the night before, that way if they have room, and they do want him in for the day you may be able to have it all done on the same day.

If I need a sample from one of the dogs I go to the vets ask for a kidney bowl then walk him around outside he will have to pee, because of all the other dogs who have, the VN may even help you.
Sounds like it could be a prostate problem to me, if he's still intact? Our Rottweiler Storm (RIP). Had these very same symtoms February the year before last. I took him to the vet and the vet diognosed an enlarged prostate. Storm was castrated a few days later and within 14 days his prostate was completely back to its normal size. Please take the dog to the vet asap! Unfortunately later that year Storm went on to get Lymphoma and died in the January last year.

update on max...
managed to get a sample...very dark looked like it contained lots of blood ( i,m a nurse)
took him to the vets this morning..
they are not convinced it is a urine infection as no other symptoms such as urgency or straining
urine test showed loads of blood as i,d thought
going to treat him with antibiotics for 10 days blood will clear if a urine infection
no enlarged prostrate that they felt rectally but said as big breed can be diffcult to feel one from the rectum
if no improvement within 10 days will go back and have ultrasound...fingers crossed it is just a urine infection and nothing more sinister...

Hi, sorry to hear about Max. :( Will the vet be checking for kidney/bladder stones?

I presume that the vet was feeling for any large bladder stones when she is palpating his tummy...
i would think that they will ultrasound his kidneys and bladder if and when they do his prostrate...
no mention was made of kidney or bladder stones...but i did ask if could be anything more to do with the bladder but she just said if it was an infection the antibiotics would clear it...
Shame they didnt give me correct dosage before i had left the surgery, after arriving home found that the tablets were only enough for a 30kg dog max is 43kg so had to phone the surgery and they are going to post me some more today.
needing to give 1 1/2 tablets instead of just 1

Hi Ojoj,
Some years ago, one of our Cockers (RIP) had a similar problem; having gone for the more obvious problems the cause was a grass seed caught inside his foreskin (?) this was causing inflamation and bleeding and if I remember correctly was removed quite easily by our vet. Has he been in the long grass? I do hope this is the solution as it will be much more straight forward.
All the best,
Sarah
