Topic Dog Boards / Health / poo not very nice

lily's poo is normally very solid, but today and yesterday she has done a runnyish, mucousy poo with what looks like a tinge of blood. she is up to date with her worming. she has been straining recently, which might explain the blood ? she did have quite a few pieces of dried tripe the other day (she stole a bag from her cupboard, i'll be finding tripe in random places around the house for weeks...) could it be to do with this ?

she has a vets appointment on friday for her weight check, if it continues would it be ok to wait till then ? or should i make an appointment tomorrow ? assuming she's still doing nasty poos...

see how she is tomorrow. starve her for 24 hours, then give a light diet for a few days, boilded rice and chicken that kind of thing. gradually reintroduce normal food after 24-48 hours, depending on how she goes. the blood is because her delicate bowel lining has been damaged with the diarr, and is not unusual, nor anything to panic over. provided she remains bright, and is drinking you shouldnt need to take her to the vets. but if she gets lethargic, and/or begins vomiting, then give them a call.

ok thanks, so is the mucous nothing to worry about ? i hope she doesnt lose any weight with the starving, she's going to the vets for her 6 month weight check - i don't want them to think i'm not feeding her enough :)

she's been her normal lively self, so that's good

I had the same with my pup, turned out to be colitus (bacteria in the colon)  weeks course of antibiotics sorted it out and hes now back to normal, infact even better!! Apparently lots of pups and young dogs can get this.
Hope shes better soon.

when i arrived home from college today, my boyfriend presented me with a poo (done by lily). it was just a puddle (large) of mucous with small blood clots in it, lily had also done 2 10p sized red blobs of liquid poopy stuff on the carpet :(  i immediately called the vet in a bit of a panic and they've just said to feed her some pasta and stuff and take her in tomorrow (she's got her weight check anyway) i hope she's ok :(

ps. ever so nice of the boyfriend to save me the poo to look at - i'm sure it was just because he didn't want to clean it up !

What a helpful boyfriend!

Seriously, the only time I have seen this from one of my dogs was when (as we discovered a couple of days later) she'd stolen a sandwich wrapped in clingfilm, and the plastic wasn't coming through properly. We had to give her lots of rehydration fluid as she was getting very dehydrated (a pint of water, a tablespoon of sugar and a teaspoon of salt dissolved in it). The vet said the test for dehydration was to get hold of her scruff then let go. If it went back instantly, she was okay, but if it went back slowly she was getting dehydrated.

After 2 or 3 days of this (well in herself, but always trying to poo and only producing a couple of drops of bloody mucus) she managed to pass the clingfilm, and was immediately fine again.

Hope your girl will be well too.

oh god i hope she hasn't got something stuck in her :( i've been making her drink lots ever since she started the ickyness so hopefully she won't be dehydrated... just worried about a blockage now :(
