Is there a copy of the breed standards that the ordinary person can use as a guide when purchasing there first puppy                                                                                                                                                                     jsticklebackjack@aol.com

the breed standard would be the same for pet or show dogs.  Look at the kennel club website, I think it is www.thekennelclub.org.  Also make sure your pups parents have had all the relevant health checks for that breed.

Most breed clubs will have a copy of their breed standard.  If you contact the breed club or go on their web site you should have some success or you could try the Kennel Club website (assuming your in the UK) they have information on the various different breeds.
