Hello all,
I posted on here a few days ago about science diet causing tummy upsets in my golden pup. I decided to take Bailey off it as it simply wasn't working for him and he'd lost quite a bit of weight because of it.
The vet gave me a sample of Purina ProPlan and i'm wondering if this is any good?
Looking at the analysis it has 30% protein compared to the pedigree chum 8%.
Should i try this out or go with my original plan of getting him on the Burns?

Tried to do a search on this, but didn't find much.

  Any advice please ?  :)

my dogs love it.i would put your dog on the adult food as the protein is high, that what did with teyha when she was 4 1/2 months old.my lot love the samlon and rice,[yes i did read the paper this week about samlon]but one day we all got to go so why we are on this place for a short time enjoy it.

Hi Jasmine,
I would definitely go with Burns. I think its a fantastic food.  My mothers 5 mth cocker spaniel is thriving on it.  since going on to the burns she poos much much less.  Her coat is soft and shiny and she looks brilliant on it.
If you do a search on here and type in burns theres absolutely loads of posts which mention it.

I feed raw, but if I was to change to dry complete I wouldn't entertain anything else after seeing the difference in my mothers pup, especially the poop side of things..... trust me.... its amazing how much less they go on the burns, thats because they are digesting most of the food and theres no rubbish in it.

All top of the range completes are good foods. It is trial and error to discover which food suits your dog best. We can all recommend which food we prefer but really it will come down to individual dogs. My own dogs did very poorly on Burns but look great on Purina :-)

The protein analysis is different depending on whether the food is dry or wet!  So you are not comparing apples with apples.  First of all you have to remove the moisture content from canned food  in order to be able to correctly identify which of the foods has a higher protein content; you may be surprised.

Also, please remember that although the label tells you that it contains 30% CRUDE protein, this in no way informs you how much of that protein is actually bio available to your dog.  If the majority of the protein came from feathers and hoofs for example then none of it would be available to your dog!

The other thing to look at is the source of the protein.  If the majority of the protein is plant based it is incomplete; only animal sources (apart from soya) are complete; eg contain all the essential amino acids for growth.  Unfortunately in processed dog foods some amino acids are destroyed by cooking hence you will see them added back in on the label.  Again the label does not tell you how much of the CRUDE protein is animal/cereal based therefore you are in the dark.

Also if you say that Hills upsets your dog it may be because of one of the ingredients; how do the ingredients of Hills and ProPlan differ?

Hello!

My puppy was on Chicken and Rice proplan, he is now 6 months old and I have transferred him to another Purina brand for Puppys/Juniors avail in chicken and rice and lamp & rice and he adores it...

Hi Jasmine,

I fed four dogs on Proplan for many years and they all did very well on it.  I haven't looked at in a while, but the reason I chose it was because it was preferred by the breeder I got one of my pups from (a GSD) and her many dogs were very healthy with glossy coats and the quality of the protein (chicken) was very good.

Now, however, I would use Burns if using a dry complete.

I have had my dogs on pro-plan now for about 2 weeks and i can already see improvement in them. People at ringcraft have also noticed in my sibie, her coat condition is much better. Will be sticking to this from now on, apart from their raw stuff they get.
