Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Adopting a greyhound?

My son has always wanted a greyhound as he thinks they are great.  I know that when they come into retirement they are looking for homes.  We have a good sized garden and plenty of love to give the only problem is w have a small dog.  Would this be a problem to a greyhound or do they settle quite quickly into a house? We have thought about other rescue breeds but the greyhound keeps cropping up. (think my son would take in any stray dog soon be over run).

There is a link on the greyhound page of champdogs under 'clubs' for a greyhound rescue...sure they can help with any questions.

I adopted a greyhound about 5 months ago, she is a 5 year old ex-racer and we love her to bits.  She settled in straight away and is the most laid back dog ive come across :D :D .  Gypsy was handed in by her trainer at the end of her career, was already completely house trained and walks to heal like a dream.  When we take her for a walk we keep her muzzled as a precaution (which was supplied by the GR) obviously being trained to chase a rabbit she would be off at the first chance.  I think it depends on the dog as to if and when you can let them off the lead, also a lot of them suffer with problems with their teeth.  We let Gypsy off when the coast is clear but to be honest she just trots happily next to us.  We have 3 other dogs, a Pharaoh, Westie and Cocker and they all get together fine.  I think from now on there will always be a space for a greyhound in this house :).  I would definately recommend them, obviously you need to speak to the rescue people if you have any cats or small animals so that they can match you up with one that is safe.  You get 10 times back what you put in :D :D :D  here is the link to the GR website  http://www.grwe.co.uk - well it its suppose to be a link but it doesn't seem to explain how to do it in help anymore :( :(

Hi Guest

I know of lots of people who have ex-racing greys with very small dogs and cats.  There are many greyhound rescues who will fully assess the dogs prior to rehoming, to ensure that the dog meets your household needs and you meet the dog's needs.
