Topic Dog Boards / Health / Briard lazy ear

We have a 1 year old Briard who had his ears cropped as a puppy and glued together to train them to stand up. This was great until about 2 months ago when one of them started to droop. Could an ear have been hurt in play or some other problem. Any ideas on how to correct the problem? He is not a show dog just our best friend.

Thanks

As the natural ear of a briard is a drop ear, the cropping and gluing is used in an effort to stiffen the remaining ear into an upright position, but I would suppose some will never be totally erect. I have seen many Great Danes and other docked docks on programs hailing from USA where the cropped ears are less than fully erect. Some breeds, notably GSD that are meant to have erect ears have them flop too.

I think you will just have to accept his ears the way they are :D Think of it adding character to your pet. Personally I prefer the natural ears.

Ears will sometimes 'drop' during hormonal changes. It is more likely though that the dog merely has what is called a 'lazy' ear or was injured through play. There is a very extensive site on caring for cropped ears with a contact number to call for problems at the Eiledon Briards site. The other site that you may want to visit is Briards On-line.
