No, you can get liver ones as well. See Breed Standard.

yes flat coated retrievers are one of my favourites, unfortunatly cancer can shorten their life dramatically, but they are not alone! hopefully a flatcoat owner/breeder will be along to help you further.

p.s. thats a huge f/c, never seen one that big before!

Its not that big, I used to look after 3 flat coats -  2 bitches and a dog.  The dog was quite big compared to the bitches, he was bigger than the one in the picture.  They are lovely dogs, they stay young and playful longer than alot of breeds.  The ones I looked after were already trained so I couldnt tell you how difficult to train they are but I would imagine they take more work than the average gundog :)

my friend alice has a year old black f/c called marley is a big boy, much bigger than the standard, he really is a clown but very loving, from what they have said hes very willing to please, but just likes to make you laugh!
i wanted to get a male liver f/c but really dont know, im very worried about the cancer,
does anyone know what the average age is for them to die from it?
i know 50 % of them get tumours either safe or cancerous, also i know which kind they get (MFH)

<<that's a huge f/c, never seen one that big before!>>

The woman may be only 4' tall for all we know - the camera can't always be trusted! ;)

I've got a Flatcoat bitch called Liberty who is almost 2yr.
They are wonderful dogs, very kind natured and full of life, and definately 'people' dogs. There are a few FCR breeders who often post on the board, who have years of experience with the breed. Otherwise you could contact the Flatcoat Retriever Society.

Best wishes

liberty

Edited to add, there is sadly a high incidence of cancer in the breed, but the FCR Society is working very hard to try and find the reasons behind it, an otherwise healty FCR should have a life-span between 12-14yrs

Not seen the magazine, but if it has a tan muzzle and legs, with a black coat, its a Gordon Setter. Slightly bigger and thicker set than an Irish Setter, much nicer temperment and amazing to train!! - you might guess I have one!

That was my first thought before I found the picture, but it's definitely a f/c.
:)

Hi Debs, I've seen the magazine (had a sneaky look in WH Smiths ;)  ) and it's definately a flattie :)

Email me for more information about the breed. It is best to  know as much as possible about them before getting one. They are active and highly intelligent which can cause a few problems, so they do need training. If you are still set on getting one after you have met some then I would suggest that you contact Mrs Shirley Johnson whose details you can get off the Flatcoated Retriever Society web site. It might help as if you told me where you live, as I could then put you in touch with a good breeder who would be able to invite you to meet their dogs before you take the next step of getting one.

One of my favourite breeds...gorgeous dogs.  Would so love to have another one (but hands full with 3 Staffs right now!)  Have had 3 F/C's...all Belsud breeding.

Very lively, playful and affectionate and can be wilful but with a real eagerness to please.
