Hi
My Wire Fox Terrier, Alfie (age 2 1/2) swallowed 2 ladies ankle socks over the Christmas Period which he has yet to our knowledge pass. I didnt actually see him eating them but my mum is convinced he did. He is eating normally and does not seem to be in any way affected by it. It has been a week now so I think if he was going to pass them he would have by now. Do you think I should take him to the vet for an X-ray?

Were they rolled up and/or knotted, does his breath smell. If the answer to either is yes than I would see a vet if no and he seems OK I would leave it a couple more days.
One of mine swallowed a pair of knotted pop socks and they were vomited back after about 7 days, another swallowed a Kindder Egg and that came back after 5 days complete with plastic toys but minus chocolate.

Dont'talk to me about socks! my lab ate two socks and a pair of my knickers the other week. We waited and waited for any signs of vomiting or passing them - nothing - then TWO Weeks later - he puked them up in the back of my car! which was nice of him ha ha. he is fine now. I really wouldn't worry too much unless he is vomiting or showing signs of illness. They make their way up or down eventually. He has eaten them in the past too but sent them down! when I spoke to my vet the first time he did it, he told me of a dog that ate a ladle type spoon!!! he passed it! OUCH! ha ha

Thanks for your posts, I feel lucky thats all he managed to get!!
He is his usual mad self showing no signs of illness so I will just have to be patient. I think the poor dog is getting paranoid about me constantly lurking around him to see if they have appeared yet!!
He ate a net dispenser bag, the ones you get with washing tablets, a while back and he decided to bring that up just as we sat down with a chinese takeaway, so no doubt he'll choose his moment!
Thanks again for your help!

admittedly it is horrible and yes you get the feeling that the poor dog is wondering what you are doing folloowing him around and in some cases poking through his poo! I was petrified at first but now it's just a matter of time before they reappear. After all my lab held on to them in his stomach for 2 weeks! please try not to worry. I am the most overprotective mum ever and if I can stay calm anyone can! hope all goes ok.

Barney ate a pop sock once and sicked it up and we didnt know he had swallowed it so we are extra careful with everything now. Frightened the life out of us. If it were me I would be on the safe side and get him looked at as the xmas period was a while back now.

My two are the same, they have eaten socks before & they passed through a few days later. :)
Without wanting to alarm you though, nine times out of ten socks will pass right through without a problem but if your dog shows any signs of trying to vomit but can't or goes off his food or becomes lethargic & doesn't appear to be his usual self then get him to a vets quickly.
If the sock decides to lodge itself in your dogs intestines that is considered a medical emergency & your dog will need urgent attention.
As I said I'm not trying to be alarmist & in all likelyhood the sock will just pass through but I think you should be aware of this just in case.
My Glen was the one out of 10 that got stuck. 4 dys after swallowing it he took ill & had to have emergency surgery to remove it. It was stuck between his stomach & intestine causing interssuss????? Abyway he got over it still tries to nick socks & hankies but I`ve been too fast for him since then :D
Fablab`s right, just keep eye on him & any sign of him being unwell & take him the vet.

I ALSO HAVE AN ALFIE WHO'S 9 MONTHS (ROTTWEILER) ABOUT 6 WEEKS AGO HE SWALLOWED MY SOCK AND THREE DAYS LATER SICKED IT UP AGAIN. NEEDLESS TO SAY I THREW IT AWAY!!! MY VET TOLD ME NOT TO WORRY AND THAT IT WOULD COME OUT ONE WAY OR ANOTHER. IF I WERE YOU I'D CONTACT YOUR VET FOR SOME ADVICE AS IT WAS SOME TIME AGO FOR YOUR DOG.

I have a three year old Wire Haired Fox Terrier and he is always eating something whether it be pop socks or my daughters socks. We try and keep them out of his way but he will jump at the table if he sees something he fancies. Just before Christmas he was given a latex ball and he played with it for ages then it disappeared, we searched the house from top to bottom and could not find it. We then took him to the vets who said to be on the safe side they would x-ray him. They found nothing. Were told to watch him. About 1 week later while we were cleaning my husband suddenly had an idea and looked behind the central heating radiators and low and behold there was the ball it must have bounced up inside the wall and radiator. WHFT are full of mischief but good fun!!

Well the socks "appeared" last night, 2 weeks and 5 days after they were swallowed!
Thanks again to everyone who posted comments - it definitely helps to share these experiences!!
Adnil - yes i agree totally, completely full of mischief but couldn't imagine life without him!

Do tell, are they still wearable? (after a machine wash of course) :D

I think you are very lucky ..a friend of mine is standing vigil over one of her huskies who has peritonitis following an operation to remove a sock :(
Agree with you Mel, they`re very lucky the dogs have managed to get them out one way or the other without any probs. My Bonnie also swallowed a small piece of plastic which embedded itself in her tummy wall & caused a lot of ulceration, tokk ages to clear up after op to remove it!
How`s your friends dog doing now? Hope he`s on the mend :)

We actually heard yesterday that he has , at last , turned the corner ..so everyone is ecstatic :D Thank you for asking Christine :)
Mel
Thats good Mel :D
Christine, Spain.

Just to let you know that he lost his battle today :(
I thought he`d turned the corner Mel, so sorry to hear that. We just can`t be to careful with them can we.

HI
They came upwards. Completely whole, just a little slimy! Probably would have been wearable but they went straight in the bin! He then ate his dinner and lay down with a massive sigh!
Like someone said, they never learn, last nite he hi-tailed it up the stairs with a large dish sponge and looked like he was just about to try and swallow when I rescued it. We do try and keep everything away from him but he's a little monkey, he can now get himself up on top of the worktops - the tell-tale paw marks are there when we get home in the evenings!

ha ha well done! my Henry gave a little smile to me before he threw my socks and knickers up whilst I was eating my tea! It's amazing how they stay inside them for such a long time. Surely they must be feeling rotten....but they never learn! Glad everything is ok!

My Bullmastiff eats socks regularly, we do try to keep them out of his way, they always reappear. When my glasses went missing I thought I had just mislaid them. I looked for them all day, found my reading glasses but not my other pair. About 5 days later, after I had gone and got lenses put in my spare frames, Vinnie left a 'present' in the kitchen. There were my glasses, no lenses and a little bent. We had asked the vet what to do and he had said they would turn up. When I told him they had turned up he admitted that he just thought I had put them down somewhere he was quite amazed that Vinnie had got them all the way through.

P.S Dave's just reminded me about Ragga (Mastiff) eating the remote control, no not chewing it, batteries included. It reappeared as well, upwards this time. While it was inside we had a h*ll of a time trying to get her to point her nose at the telly so we could switch channels. We never have replaced it.

My boxer ate my glasses frames lens's and all. Scared the life out of me. The vet said just add a spoonfull of oil to his dinner. Mr B waited to do a poo with an audience, it was a master piece looked like a little person wearing glass's. The onlookers looked on in silence.
He also ate a fair amount of xmas card with giltter on so his number twos were quite festive
