Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / toilet training - how often
- By jennymc [gb] Date 04.01.04 22:06 UTC
I am currently toilet training my 11 week old lab ( I have had him for a week)  he was great for the first few days and seemed to let us know when he wanted to go out, but he has now started leaving us little watery accidents in the house and it seems to be every half hour!! We leave him paper down at night which works great, but in the day hes a nightmare!!  Just wanted to know anyones opinions and tips on toilet, he seems to pee an awful lot!!

The best and quickest method is simple vigilance. All the time he is awake, concentrate entirely on him. Watch him. When he is having his naps is the time for housework etc. You'll soon learn his little signals and get him out in time.

Why dont you just take him out every half an hour to start with and try and keep a note of when he goes so you can see after a bit if theres any pattern and how often he needs to go. And keep you eye out for when he circles or sniffs the ground which may be a sign he wants to go out. Other than that just make sure you take him out after he's slept or eaten.
Hope that helps! It seems to be working fairly well with my Cav pup :-)

This may be a sign of a urinary tract infaction - best to get a vet to check him out - make sure you take a urine sample in a clean jar for them to test.....

Thanks for the advice - Sam currently is on antibiotics for Colitus (which have done him a world of good) a side effect is going to the toilet a lot more!  Im just a worried new mum ;-)
