Hi,
I own a White Toy poodle that is a a family pet for the past 10 years.  A Few days ago she was diagnosed as a diabetic, and will neeed life long injections of insulin.

This is clearly going to be stressful for a time for us the owners. I wouldlike to get in contact with any other owner in a similar position, or anyone who can provide advice or any tips.

Thanks
Ron and Ruth

Hi I had a cat with diabetes and I think you will find it a bit easier having a dog because it should be better checking her urine - we had a terrible time waiting around for the cat to pee and she was an indoor cat as we lived in a flat at the time. I used to get up at 5.30am every morning for years so I could just stand and watch her before it soaked into the cat litter - but it was worth it making sure her insulin level was right. This was a few years back now so perhaps there is a better method for checking the levels now than urine? But I am sure if you can check the urine properly so you know the level of insulin to give and together with regular check ups at the vet you will be fine. I hope others on here will be able to give you a lot more help than me.

The first thing is, don't worry! In a few months time it will seem nothing important! I know exactly how you feel because I went through it a few years ago.

In no time at all you get the routine sorted and she will get use to everything. I kept a saucer specially for the early morning ritual. I used to follow her out onto the lawn and stand poised ready to slip the saucer under her as she started to go. She got used to the injections and would stand perfectly still as I took the syringe to her.

None of this happens instantaneously but its amazing just how soon it does happen. Treat everything in a calm and matter of fact way and you will soon be wondering what the worry was over!

Best wishes, John
