Hi

I am looking for a chocolate lab bitch primarily for a pet but also to breed in the future. Must have good pedigree and be friendly with other dogs.

I'm sorry, I may be misjudging you but when I see posts like this I see £££ signs! Why Chocolate? It is immediately reducing your choice of gene pool. Chocolate Labradors are the in demand dog at the moment and are seen as "Money Earners". They are also present in rescues in quantities totally disproportionate to their numbers.

Hi John
I'm the owner of a chocolate labrador, Luna is a family pet, but maybe I'll breed on her. I don't know.

I got a chocolate lab, mostly because, when I lived at home, we had a black labrador, Bonnie. Luna is MY first dog, and I didn't want to compare her to much with Bonnie, so I chose a chocolate, which still is hard to find here in Denmark.

It isn't everybody, who thinks money when they buy a dog!

But if I were that family I would go to the rescue centers, and rescue a dog from there, now that you say, they are full of choc labs.

By the way can I ask, what is the "normal" age for your labs, when they start there seasons? My girl has still not started, but her friend, a GSD on 7 months started hers on new years eve.

Jeanette and Luna, a lovely 9 months old chocolate lab.

Hi Jeanette, I did say, "Sorry, I may be misjudging you" to the guest. I realise not everyone is looking at ££ signs but with 35000 Labradors registered in the UK alone last year I really do worry about the future of the breed I love.

As the "Normal" age for a first season, The oldest of any of mine was my Katy who came into season for the first time at 13 months. The earliest was Anna at exactly 6 months. Quite a difference and this could stretch a little more. Really anything between 5 and 14 months would be within reason so there is plenty of latitude.

Best wishes, John

Jeanette, my wee Lab bitch "Tia" had her first season in November at 11mths of age, so there's nothing for you to worry about yet but if she goes more than 13mths without a season probably then speak to your vet. :)

Hi

Thank you. I'm only thinking about it, because my friends puppy, Bella is having her first season now. She is a GSD and only 7 months old. I know she is early, but I thought Luna would be first, considering she is 2 months older than Bella.
Oh wel,l I'll wait and see.
