Topic Dog Boards / General / Type of harness - any recommendations?

Our dog Poppy is a one year old 8.5kg miniature schnauzer.  She is wonderful in most ways if a little excitable!  Our only problem, which I have posted about in the past is that she is a nightmare on the lead.  We have tried halti's and gentle leaders, but she squeals like nothing on earth (even with 2 months of persistants).

We are now back to a normal collar (and peace in the village has been restored).  We often try the stopping and walking in the other direction technique, which does have a brief (1 minute) effect until she see something or recognises something equally interesting in the other direction......  The real problem is that she sometimes chokes and really exhausts herself, so we are now thinking of a harness.  Can anyone recommend a type of harness that would suit this size of dog.  Also, any other tips would be useful.

Many thanks
Karen.

The easywalk training harness is very good.  It comes in 4 sizes and is reasonably priced.  The Mikki Walkrite is similar.

Dear Both

Thanks for your suggestions, I will look them up and take a luck.

Anymore suggestions from Champdoggers would be useful - particularly to help the pulling.

Thanks
Karen.

Hi Karen
Roger Mugford has just brought out a new halti training harness  which I have used and was amazed at the fingertip control it gave.  I don't know how they would compare as I have never used a halti or other harness.  They don't have them on their website, but I know they've only had them for about a month so if you're interested probably best to call them and have a chat.  I found them very helpful.  www.companyofanimals.co.uk

I have found the kumfi stop pull quite good, it makes the pulling more manageable but it doesn't actually stop it though. (It was on a very active working cocker at the time though.) The lupi harness is similar but dos tend to rub. I have heard a lot about the walkezee harness which  is supposed to be brilliant, and i'm considering it for my dogs. It has a strap that goes around the chest at the front, which seems different to most harnesses. As far as i am aware you can only buy it online at www.walkezee.com. They seem quite reasonable too.

Thanks all - I am going to have a look at the options you have suggested on the web sites.  Definitely got to try something - we have been out for our walk today and she is often choking, which really isnt good.

Thanks

Dear All

I have been asked to continue on this thread.  Still havent bought a harness, but have looked at info on the Walkeeze, the Kumfi Stop Pull and the Hi Craft Stop Pull.  Not sure which to go for.  I know that the Hi Craft and Kumfi say that they use and upward movement on the front legs if the dog pulls.  I wonder if this will work with Poppy as she tends to thrust with her back legs and I can just image her running along in a upright position :-0

Any thoughts, or further recommendations would be much appreciated, as I have already spend so much money/time on different collars and headcollars.

Thank you
Karen.

Hi Sally

I have bought a Mikki Walkrite.  The instructions say to just use it for 10-15 mins and then switch to normal collar walking.  I would be really intersted to know if this is what you have done with your Mikki and how successful it was.  We have been out for a couple of 5 min walks on it just to get her used to it.  There was no pulling, but just a bit of squealing/barking - pretty similar to when we tried a gentle leader (apart from she did not try to get this one off all the time!).  I think her noisiness is largely to do with her not rushing ahead and getting her own way.

My concern is that once we switch back to the normal collar she will just race ahead as usual.  Would appreciate your experience with this.

Best Wishes
Karen.
