Does any body know how much it cost to have a puppies heart scanned.
At my pups second visit to the vet(8 weeks), the vet said she has a heart murmur. I asked a few questions but she was much help. Where can I get more info?
Thanks
I believe that there are very mild heart murmers that can be detected at a very young age, that totally disappear at a later check - a matter of weeks - I think they are graded as to severity, with 1 being the mildest, I would insist on the Vet giving me more information, and if necessary asking a different Vet.
I'm sure someone with more experience will be along soon
All the best
Hayley

I would hold fire for some weeks more, as it is often the case that a slight murmer is detected in pupos as young as this, and disappears, being just a mild developmental issue.
I beleive that as more pups are going to the vet sooner, that is why more of these are picked up. When pups didn't have thei9r jabs until 10 and 12 weeks they would not have noticed this.
Take her back to the vet for a recheck at about 14-16 weeks, and if there is still a murmer ask for a specialist referal to a cardiologist.

My puppy went to the vet again last night. I saw a different vet than last time. At first he said the murmur had gone completely, then listened again he could hear a very slite murmur rated at less than a grade 1. So hopefully it should never cause her a problem.

Sure it won't, just keep a check but a murmur in a puppy is far from unusual.
My GSD pup was found to have a slight heart murmur at 12 weeks, and was told it would probably disappear. A few weeks later the vet said it was a mechanical heart murmur and it would be checked regularly. At 10 months she became ill all of a sudden, panting and not well. She had scans at the vets costing £220, and was referred to a heart specialist for deeper scans costing £560. They found out she had been born with a hole in the heart and had to have major surgery to plug the hole. cost £2,900. Don't want to alarm you as your dog probably hasn't got the same complaint, but if they hadn't have operated when they did she would have died. She had a check up 3 months later (another £500) and she is fine, no leakage, apart from having an enlarged heart. She will now have to have scans for the rest of her life. She is worth every penny.

My puppy was said to have a murmur at 8 weeks, but it had gone completely at 12 weeks when he had his second injections. It is very common and I think that vets should explain this when they tell you about the existence of a murmur. For someone who hasn't come across this before, especially a first time owner, it can come as a shock. Whilst not all murmurs clear up like this, the vast majority do.

Think it would be true to say that a slight mummer in puppies is so common I am surprised that the vet even mentions it, in fact, IMO it is irresponsible for them to do so, putting the owner through unnecessary worry and, guess what, no doubt encouraging lots of extra visits every time the pup has an off day. If the vet is concerened at the second injection all they need do is tell the owner to book the pup in at 6 or 9 months for its final puppy check.
