Can any body tell me is it ok to give dogs suppliments eg glucosomine, chondrin and cod liver oil etc, i have newfoundlands and feed them naturediet but the dry foods contain these suppliments but not the naturediet. I still want my dogs to have these suppliments for their bones and joints but need to find out if its safe.

I have seen codliver oil for sale in the local pet shop but they charge triple what it costs in the supermarket for human use and i expect its the same stuff anyway

All I can say is if you are feeding your dog a complete food, be it dry or moist, it should be exactly what it says it is.....complete :) Is naturediet a complete food, if so why do you feel it should be supplemented with anything?

Cod Liver Oil should only be given sparingly; it contains Vitamins A and D which are fat soluble vitamins and any excess is stored in the liver; too much can be dangerous and toxic.  If you are giving both glucosamine and chondroitin there should be no need to give CLO if you are giving CLO for joints.  I feed my dogs occasional CLO capsules in the winter as I work full time and they see little daylight (needed for Vitamin D).  If you want to feed oils than I would suggest you use Fish Body Oils with Omega 3s, you cannot overdose on those.

Human supplements are fine for dogs in these particular cases.

I have always given my labs cod liver oil (sparingly though) or omega fish oils, and think that is why brackens bones are so spur free for a three legged 11 year old lab.  I also give them a garlic tablet and selenium (oncologist recommended this) and bracken has a magnesium but that is because she had problems with her magnesium and the vet suggested it.  Mine are fed same food as us (well they have meat and vegetables rice or pasta daily not quite the same as me as I am a vegetarian lol)
