Topic Dog Boards / General / will it or won't it?

hi

i have been given some conflicting advice re, spaying, i have been told that if you spay your bitch it can help with a hypoactive dog as it will stabilise her moods and then someone on the other hand has said that it can actually make a bitch worst has she won't be producing oestrogen which has a calming effect, i'm confused are either right or does it have no affect at all whether their spayed or not , the reason i am asking is that i have a hypo bitch and am considering spaying not to calm her down but for other reasons, on the other hand if spaying does make them worse i may reconsider

thanks

in my experience it hasnt affected temperment, some people think it can reduce risks of diseases associated with the reproductive system, others believe it to contribute to them.

i personally think it reduces the risk, but in my experience doesnt affect temperment, of course im sure someone will be along to correct me soon :) :)

all the best

In my experience, castrating a dog can (but only can) help a dog with dog to dog dominance aggression problems. Spaying a bitch really only has any effect (if any) on a bitch with a hormonal problem, be that aggression or any other sexual related temperament problem. In other words, a problem which only occurs just before and during her seasons.

Please do not consider spaying because of the bitches temperament only, you do not say what breed or what age she is but if she is a hyper type breed and under 2 years old, she should improve as she matures, if she is going through the teenage stage. Have never found that spaying calmed a bitch down but have found it can make them a bit more aggressive.

Just remembered its a puppy I think but cant remember the breed.

hi

shes a 8th month old boxer, no your right, i was'nt thinking of getting her spayed to calm her down, but when i work away from home she goes to stay with my sister who has an entire bulldog and boxer so if she were in season its going to be a problem, but i was worried about was the spaying making her more hyper and someone had told me that it can make bitches aggressive, so if that was true i would have to think long and hard about getting her spayed and think about making arrangements if it coincided with me working away which to be honest is'nt that often

thanks for your advice

At 8 months your Boxer is full of the joys of puppyhood. She will become calmer as she matures. Spaying, in my experience, has absolutely no effect at all on temperament. If you have a vet that you trust tell him/her your concerns and ask for his/her opinion.

Spaying does different things to difeerent bitches.

Different people will tell you their personal opions and experrineces on it.  Personally I dont think spaying is a good idea, talk to a vet and they will do it there and then!

Its up to you to make your own choice.  Take in what everyone has told you and somehow try and make a conclusion out of it.

Jojo,

Spaying does not do a thing to a bitch's temperament.

Why don't you have a talk with your sister re what will happen when your bitch comes into season?  Personally, I would not leave a bitch in season in someone else's home with two intact males - even if it was my own sister's home.  It is too much responsibility to give someone else.  And her dogs could really become handfuls with a bitch in season around.  I don't think it would be very fair to your sister.

Stacey think Jojo said she would make other arrangements if she decides to keep the bitch intact. Think like most things there is no black or white, it will effect some bitches and not others, main trouble being you don't know beforehand which will be effected and which will not.

thanks folks for all your replys its deffernantly food for thought and i will be considering all your advise before i come to a decision, she has had vaginnitus(wrong spelling) since we got her so are hoping the season will help to clear it up?
