Hi~
I was hoping I could get help with another question, since you were all so helpful the last time.
I have a litter of 3 week old puppies and they don't seem all that interested in their weaning diet...they would rather nurse than anything. Between the 9 of them they don't even eat 1/4 cup at 1 feeding.
I take the mother away for a few hours so they should be hungry but they just aren't interested. I even mix in a little yogurt to make it yummy and to no avail.
Any helpful suggestions would be greatly appreciated.!
TIA~
Amanda

Try some scraped beef to get them going.

As Jackie says, try them with scraped beef. At 3 weeks about a teaspoon per pup per day is ample.

Can I jump into your post please? Ive just logged in to ask the same question almost! My pups are 1 day off 4 weeks and all bar one are doing well. The other pup is just not interested at all. He takes one lick may be 2 and wont eat any more. I've tried puppy food soaked, tinned, rice pud, egg, raw meat, but nothing interests him. He is still feeding from mom fine and gaining weight, playing etc, is he just slower? and is that ok?

Have you tried ready brek or weetabix or any other milky based food or dry puppy feed soaked with boiling water, my pups tend to take it as soon as they are ready

what is scraped beef? Im in the US is it called something different here?...or maybe Im just dumb (lol)
and what is Brek and weetabix?
I am willing to try anything I just don't know what these are. And is it possible some pups are just slower than others? they take a few licks and then seem like they just don't want anymore.
If I use egg do I use the yoke or the white?
TIA!
Amanda

Scraped beef - take a nice piece of raw beefsteak and scraped the flat side with the blade of a knife to get a meaty pulp - pups love it, and they can't choke on it like they can sometimes with minced (ground) beef.
:)

If your babies are having 1/4 cup full between them at 3 weeks, they seem to be doing ok. At this age, they are just learning how to smell / lick / taste their food. If they are eating some (& as JG said a teaspoon each is enough at this stage), then sounds like they're doing just fine.
Some pups take to solids quite quickly, others are slower, as long as they're all a healthy weight & gaining weight at a nice rate - they're ok. Also if mom has got lots of milk & she's satisfying them, they may be a bit slow with their solids.
Beef does have a strong smell to it & you'll soon see their little noses twitching & their little tongues licking their lips, if you offer them some. :)

hi amanda,
in reply to your post on constipated puppy.
try some liquid parraffin, you can get this from your local chemist, you'll also need 2 syringe's,use one to give the pup about 1ml of parraffin by mouth and the other to administer 1ml up his bum, don't worry you wont hurt him ,you only have to put the tip of syringe in,you will find it only takes a few hrs to get them moving again,if not give a little more, but i assure you your pup will going to loo in no time after giving treatment, good luck!
