How much is the approximate cost of a pet passport, including everything. my vet has quoted about £180 vets fees plus the admin work needed, which he reckons all in is about £250. Is this about right or should i shop around?

I paid nearly £60 for two to have the Rabies Shots, and the blood tests for the two £130. The only other expense will be the health check and the Issue of the Paperwork by the Vet, nearer the time of Travel. At the moment all the passport stuff has still MAFF headings, so he wants to wait for it all to become DEFFRA before he gives it all to me. I would imagine I will be charged a normal Consultation fee, and maybe a few Quid extra for form filling.
That makes it less than your £250, and I have had two done!! I would shop around :D
If you are anywhere near Bristol, the pet Vaccination clinic are also doing PETS at a reasonable price.

Thanks. My vet did quote £30 for rabies and about £65 for the blood tests which is similiar but they were a bit vague about the other costs and only quoted all in.Except microchipping which was £22.50 but i know that can be got cheaper elsewhere. So do you know what other costs are involved. I picked up a leaflet from the vet but that was nopt too helpful Also what is DEFFRA. Do all the costs go to the vet or is there anything payable to maff?

Total charge at my vet in the Berkshire area is £26.20 for the microchip and then £160.39 for the initial rabies vaccination, blood test and passport. It varies vastly from area to area and seems to be dependent on what the market can bear. All three of my dogs are on the pet passport scheme.
The prices for vaccines here in the UK was staggering to me. For example, a rabies vaccine can be purchased in the US at the vet for around $15 and from a supply house for $7.45. Puppy vaccinations can be purchased for an entire litter for around $68.75 (25 vials of "The Puppyshot" A combination vaccine for immunizing puppies and dogs against canine distemper, hepatitis, corona virus, parainfluenza, parvovirus and respiratory disease caused by adenovirus type 2. Contains killed corona virus and modified live distemper, parainfluenza, parvovirus and adenovirus type 2); Intra-trac for approximately $15.00 (for five vials). Other than rabies vaccines (which is prohibited from any but veternarian usage in the majority of states), it is legal in most states for owners to vaccinate their own dogs. Micro-chipping was around $20 at the veternarians and less at clinics. Taking the exchange rate into consideration, dogs are a very expensive addition to a home here in the UK.
One of the advantages over here though is that we do not have a heartworm problem requiring annual testing and preventative, nor is there a need to vaccinate for coronavirus or (to my understanding) lyme disease. Without being a doomsayer, I would have to say that most of us who go to dog shows should seriously consider the ramifications of dogs outside England coming in and the potential for additional vaccinations in the future.

Most European dogs are treated on a regular basis for things such as Heartworm :-)

Good to hear. Mine will be on permanent heartworm preventative once we start taking them outside of England. Having had to go through countless treatments to rid dogs of heartworm when I was doing a lot of rescue, I would never take a chance on one of mine. Once US and Canadian dogs are eligible for the pet passport scheme, I'm going to look very seriously at also doing coronavirus vaccinations. Just got back from getting Kai's rabies vaccination and discussed all of this with our vet who says that he gets all the American journals so that he can stay on top of everything.

Oh well I don't think I'll be bothering, it's way too expensive. So unfortunate that I won't be able to show my breed in countries where they are counted as a real breed.

Perhaps I've been lucky but I've never been charged for any paper work or admin. I have paid purely for the microchip, the rabies jab and the blood test which has come to about £110. It probably depends what area you are in and possibly how good a customer you are - I would expect to pay admin costs etc if I went to a different vet, but with 7 dogs (previously 8) my vet knows he gets a good income from me so I get the occasional discount!
