Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Sources of Green Tripe?
- By MoneygallJRTs [ie] Date 19.12.03 09:45 UTC
Hi all

It was suggested in a previous post that I use some green tripe to tempt my puppys away from the mother's breast, as the weaning isn't going as planned.

Well, where do you guys get it from?

I asked in every butcher in town yesterday, and they all said they didn't ever have it, and to try the abattoir.

So I tried both the abattoirs in town, and they both told me they weren't allowed to give/sell offal to members of the public.  Are the laws different here in Ireland?  Where DO you guys get your tripe from?

Any suggestions greatfully received...

Hi

I get mine from my local pet shop - I pay 19p for a pound. They keep loads and loads of it bagged up in the freezer. They are a very traditional pet supplies store though, selling frozen chicks and rats etc (no livestock at all)... not a pet superstore kind of place.

I can also get tripe through my butcher - but its the washed stuff and thats not as good for the dogs :)

I think Wishfairy was having the same problems in Ireland too getting hold of it for her dane...might be worth PM'ing her :)

Hi Caroline, Mine is delivered to the door by my tripe man, he deals with the abbatoir, I know that it has to be dealt with under strict conditions  but I will ask him how things work in Ireland and get back to you, he is coming this afternoon.
Don't they sell it in pet shops over there??  It is always more expensive than 'direct'  but still works out cheaper than anything else.
Debbie.

I honestly couldn't tell you where my nearest pet shop was?  I buy all my feed from a local feed merchant, and leads & bits are accumulated from dog shows.

Thanks in advance for any info your 'tripe man' can give :D

Caroline,  I spoke to my chap and apparently when we had the foot and mouth scare here he had to get his tripe from Ireland, so you obviously can get it there but he did not have a contact on him but will be getting it for me for his next visit on Wednesday.  Also with regard to 'this new legislation'  he has heard nothing from DEFRA and you would have thought that people with business' such as his would be the first to hear.

I'm having the same trouble up here :(

The pet shops I can buy it in are very expensive - 55p for 1/2 lb block  and none of the butchers will touch it  I've been told to try the abbatoir in Newtownards but to say that I am a breeder not just an owner as they might deal with me differently.

If I have any luck Iwill certainly let you know.

Hi Caroline

Take a look at the "Animal By Products Legistation thread" - that might give you more information than you wanted :(:(

not sure on the law in ireland but usually they are more or less similar to over here.i have just sourced a supplier that delivers it to the door locally for 17p a lb, only thing is it is minced and i would rather have it whole but for that price i will tolerate it lol, beggars cann't be choosers i suppose.seems the days are gone when i used to get it free as its become popular the suppliers wised up i guess.

HI Caroline

I'm in Ireland too, most abbatoirs won't supply green tripe as the vet officers there won't allow it be sold on

I do know of one abbatoir which will supply it, and also the Association of Craft Butchers (01) 2961400 will supply you with details of butchers who kill their own animals, and may also be willing to sell it to you.

Basically the problem over here is that since green tripe is not fit for human consumption health and safety rules don't allow it to be stored anywhere near meat fit for human consumption, or something like that.
You'll probably find as I have that any butcher/abbatoir that will supply you will only do so on certain days, right after they have slaughtered

where in the country are you?

POrtlaoise Caroline, so not a million miles away :)

One of the numbers I have is for a butcher in Mountrath, will find and mail to you :)

Wish I could find one.

I have found that Forthglade tripe is quite good, but at 39p for under a pound, also expensive (and I'm using nearly 3lb a day.  The big companies that advertise won't deliver to the wilds of Zummerzet!!

I was going direct to the abbatoir, but now hubby has changed his job I can't get there at the right time.

Julia where in somerset are you.  TPMS deliver down that way to a group of BARFERS of which a freind of mine is part.  She lives in Monksilver.  It is worth them delivering as there are several of them who order together.

we used to buy a whole tripe direct from the abbatoir cut it up into large lumps and then freeze it...
our gsd did really well on it though had to feed him outside it stunk...
no longer able to get it direct as abbatoir wont sell it to public something to do with cjd possibly...
havent bothered with the stuff that can be brought from pet shops as so expensive  and not as good when compared with abbatoit prices for whole tripe, only cost £2 and lasted for weeks....

:( looks like we're out of luck here too.

I'm attending the big open show in Belfast in March so I'll ask around there too... maybe there'll be a BARF stall or something for advise.

It may be worth phoning farm shops a few still butcher there own stock.
- By Wishfairy [gb] Date 16.01.04 09:21 UTC
Doh! That never even occurred to me

I'll try that avenue :)
- By Taffo [gb] Date 16.01.04 18:09 UTC
They may butcher their own stock, but it has to be slaughtered in an approved slaughter house so the farm shop would not have access to the tripes.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 16.01.04 18:26 UTC
It can actually be slaughtered on the farm, but the meat cannot then be sold - it is only for the animal's owner's consumption.
:)
- By Taffo [gb] Date 17.01.04 11:11 UTC
I think we were talking about farmshops
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 17.01.04 13:17 UTC
Sorry. :o My mistake.
