One of the breed clubs or the kennel club should be able to help you. In the mean time make sure your bitch has all the health checks and that you understand the colour genetic for the lab. which I don't but there are those on the forum who do.

Do you mean that you want a Labrador Stud dog which is Chocolate coloured or that you want a Labrador Stud dog which carries the chocolate gene? Not the same thing at all.

Hi,
Make sure that the stud dog has a satisfactory hip-score, and has a recent clear-eye certificate (just as your bitch obviously has, or you wouldn't consider breeding from her). Also, if your bitch is chocolate, you'll know not to use a chocolate stud.

i am  still learning.why is it better to use a different colour labrador to bred with ?we had our bitch hip scored and she received a score of 6 to both hips is this good or bad,2 vets gave different advise.

Hi,
Was her hipscore a total of 6, or 6 on each side, giving a total of 12? Either is better than the breed average, which I believe is 16, so that's good. She will also need a specialist eye-test. John is the person to talk to about that.

Colour genetics in labradors is complicated, but as a general rule I believe chocolate should only be mated to black, to stop the pigmentation becoming 'washed out' and the chocolate colour becoming wishy-washy.

And she is over 2 years old, and under 5, isn't she?

A hip score of 6 for each hip is a total of 12. The breed mean score is 16 so your hips are slightly better than average. Look for a stud dog who is no worse than 16 and preferably better.

Labradors can carry a total of 6 hereditary eye defects so both your bitch and the stud dog should have been tested under the BVA/KC/ISDS eye testing scheme. Because some conditions can appear quite late in life the dogs should be tested every year.

Ideally elbows should be scored (Rather like the hips). The result is in the range of 0 to 3 and only a zero should be bred from or used for stud.

A chocolate mated to a chocolate often leads to poor pigmentation. If you really want some chocolate puppies then you would do better to find a stud dog who carries the chocolate gene.

Temperament is of the highest priority from both stud and bitch. Anything other and DONT DO IT! You would be doing the breed no favours at all.

Hope this is of help to you.

Regards, John
