I can't believe it. I went out thismorning for an hour and left my two beagles in their room as usual. When i returned i couldn't get in the door. They had lifted the carpet, chewed the underlay and grippers !!! and pulled the beading off the edge of the door. I don't know what has got into them. They don't particularly like being left but they do normally tolerate it. They get left with plenty of toys and a treat each.
They are definately getting worse when i leave them. I only ever leave them for 3-4 hours at the most. I have a cage but i would rather leave them in the room as i think its better for them (apart from when they make a mess). Does anyone have any suggestions to help with the seperation anxiety ? Do i need to start again with the leaving them for 10 minutes and then increasing the time. The younger one was so wound up when i got back.
I'm going to resort to the cage again but i need to improve the situation as we'll have no house left soon !!!!
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Why do you assume they are suffering from separation anxiety?  They might just be bored!

Have you tried some of the toys that are on the market which you can put food in which they have to work out how to get to.  Used to keep my old boy entertained while I was out!!

Also, when I got my latest boy (a 19 month old boxer) we left him in a room for the first day and he scratched the doorframe to pieces.  After speaking to his previous owner we found out that he had previously been given the run of the house whilst left alone.  We braved it the next day and have had no problems since!!

I think its seperation anxiety as the younger one was shaking and so distressed when i returned she was very anxious. I leave the kongs stuffed with food and they sometimes eat the food but sometimes they don't touch them. I also leave them treats and they don't eat them until i get back.
It could be boredom but whatever the problem is i would like to try and improve the situation.

Have you considered a DAP Diffuser?

Is that like a plug-in hormone thingy - if so I used to have a similar thing for one of my old cats who got really stressed out and it released "happy pheremones" which helped to calm him down.  It really worked!!!

Where can you get the DAP diffuser ? i've heard people talking about them. It is definately worth a try.

You can get them from your vet; they around £25.00 and last approx 4 weeks. refills are cheaper.

Just may be the little girl pup was in a state because the other one was doing most of the damage, you should not leave two youngsters loose together put the baby in the crate.
