Topic Dog Boards / General / Hamster basket car cages?

Has anyone used this company for car dog cages? They seem very reasonable, make cages to measure and have (optional) features that I haven't seen elsewhere like expanding cages for when the seats are fully down. Does anyone have a cage made by them? Are you happy with it? How does the "expanding" feature work??

Have just bought a Kangoo estate and am looking into the most flexible way to "dog proof" it. For short trips will probably use the boot only (currently for two large dogs who are used to travelling together). But for longer trips will want to use the whole back with seats down. And next year will have new puppy and (sometimes) be transporting another dog to shows that is not part of the family. So will need to be able to separate 2-1 (2 adults-puppy) and 1-1 (two adults from different families). With three will need to use the whole back with seats down but don't want them all rattling around loose!

I'm considering dog guard/tailgate options and cages with dividers but want to be able to configure the whole thing in different ways - and be able to remove it for the (rare! :) ) occasions when we carry human passengers! Current dogs have never been crated so am a bit worried about using cages - they have been used to tailgates/dog guards. Any suggestions?
Thanks
Janet

Yes, I use them, they are reasonable and light and easy to use. The company is friendly to use and offer all the help you need to get exactly what you want. The only thing I would say in the event of an accident they would restrain the dog but would bend and could not offer any protection in themselves, but would stop the dog being thrown around the car. The doors have a really useful system to allow you to put the lead on and have hold of it before you open the door, very useful to use when in car parks or on busy roads.  They all so make good freezer baskets.

Thanks Jackie

When you say they would bend do you think they would crush on impact? I have heard of some dogs being killed by being crushed inside cages in accidents.

The ideal arrangement I can think of is to have a cage extendable into the full length of the car with a divider across the width of the car (rather than down the length which would make the spaces like long corridors!). This would effectively give one dog the boot space and the other the "back seat" space. But having a divider across the car would also mean that the cage would need a side door (the Kangoo has sliding side door so good side access) as well as a tailgate door, and an escape door in the divider as well as the back - do additional doors weaken the structure??

I will ring Hamster Baskets and ask advice. Would be interested in anyone else's experience of kitting out cars though

Think almost any cage would crush on impact, these are made of light wire which may be an advantage as the cage it's self would not cause any damage and could be pulled off the dog. I have two cages in my Escort one that goes behind the front seat and one that fits behind it in the back of the car. there is an escape hatch between the two cages so you could bring the dog from one cage into the next in the event of say a rear end shunt and unable to open the back hatch. The rear cage can be divided into two lengthwise so in effect I have 3 separate cage compartments.
