i have just fed Toby with two lamb hearts never tried them before and he loved them, i boiled them for him, i didnt know if i should give them raw or cooked but he enjoyed them anyway, i am seriously thinking of putting him on a natural diet, or maybe one meal dry the other meat, could anyone give me some advice on what i could give him and how much he should have for one meal, he is a very big (not fat) black lab 9 months old, and he has a big appetite

Hi H/Berg, first of all you need to decide if your going to cook his food & give it him raw. Join some raw feeding groups, Britbarf on yahoo is a good one for info. Get a couple of books, Give Your Dog a Bone by Ian Billinghurst or The Complete Guide to Natural Feeding for Dogs & Cats by Richard Pitcairn are just a couple of good ones.
If you give him bones or food with bones in it they must never ever be cooked, always give them raw.

Lamb hearts are good, it`s a muscle meat & can be given from any animal, heres some other foods. Chicken/beef/lamb/turkey/rabbit/pork/fish & any game meat. For how much, well what weight is he, I can`t remember off hand the ratio? One of the others might be along soon to tell you. My labs get roughly 1lb 4oz-1lb12oz. Veg & fruit goes in the blender/processor & made into a puree first. He needs to have calcium in his diet which he will get from the bones, that is very important. :)

I agree with Christine join Britbarf and read as much about it as possible before just jumping in and decide what "version" of raw you feel comfortable with and what suits your dog.

Natural Nutrition for Dogs and Cats by Kmythy Schulze is very accessible and simple with menus etc.

As a guide adult dogs are normally fed around 2 - 3% of their bodyweight per day eg if your dog weighs 30kgs then you would feed between 600 - 900 gms per day; however a lot depends on temperament, sex, time of year, activity level; some need less some more.

The wider variety of sources you feed from the less likely allergies or food intolerances are likely.
