Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Need opinions on too many animals in US
- By Guest [us] Date 09.12.03 16:58 UTC
Hi, I have been reading this board for awhile.  I am in the U.S, and was surprised to read several times that the U.S. has a reputation for having a lot of unwanted & uncared for animals.  I know this is true, but I thought it was like this everywhere.

How different is it in the U.K.?  Here, the pounds are over run and mostly by pit bulls.  There are a lot of dogs that have been abused or mistreated or neglected.  It's very sad, but people don't seem to know how to stop it.  There are many many animals put to sleep here.  I have 2 dogs of my own that I love very much and do my best to care for.  It breaks my heart when I see other dogs put through terror.

I just wanted to get some opinions on the U.S. and why it is this way here.  Also, what is different that makes the U.S. worse?  Is it laws?  Do you have more animal-owner related laws there?  Was it ever worse there and how was it improved?  How did you improve it?  Any ideas on how to make things better for pets here?

Thank you

Hi Guest
its not just the US unfortunately :(
The rescue centres are over -run in the UK too- there is no legislation to control back street breeders or unlicenced breeders . There are no controls over the breeding of unregistered dogs and there are GREEDY breeders who just breed for MONEY - who couldnt care less about any health problems the pups they breed may have - or care about where the pups are gong to and what sort of life they may have as long as these so called breeders are lining their pockets.
As long as there is no control ( and I fail to see HOW we can adequatley control it) then it will never stop until the day people stop being charmed by pups and therefore stop buying them .
If there was no market there would be no breeding :(
