Hi all,
Well what can I say...  Jess loving the new raw diet but got up this morning and she had done a normal poop but there was also some mucousy diarrhoea and small bit of blood.  She is due to be wormed so could it be just worm infestation?  The 2nd thing is she's had brewers yeast 1 tab for the last 2 days and I have noticed slight vaginal discharge. Its like a light milky colour, not yellow or green or anything.  Is it like humans who get vaginal thrush due to the b/y or is it something else that young bitches just have?  She is 17 weeks old tomorrow.  She is paying a lot of attention to herself down there so I think its irritating her a bit.  She's also rubbing bum along the floor every so often
Puppies eh?
what do you all think?
Cheers Linda

When dogs first go on to the raw food diet there is what some people like to call a "detox" effect.

What you must remember is that "convenience" foods, which is what processed dog food is, are like the human version, they requireslittle dental mastication or enzymatic action via digestive juices.  It is quite likely that the mucus is what is being expelled from the gut; it is produced there when a great deal of cereal and/or dairy produce is ingested and due to the increased activity in digestive juices etc; it is perfectly normal and nothing to worry about.  If the blood is bright red she may have got a scratch from something sharp, again, nothing particular to worry about.

I do not feed Brewer yeast tablets for the very reason you have mentioned.  Why would I want to feed my dog something which is a fungus?  Most dogs have some sort of yeast overgrowth and, like thrush, it can be treated by probiotics or live yoghurt.  Why are you feeding the brewers yeast?  It is not essential and, IMHO, something to be avoided at all costs!  Yeast is an irritant, bin it!

Hi Tohme,
Thanks for the speedy reply.  I'm sure IB recommends b/y in his book?  I was giving it for vit b, but will buy vit b supp instead.

In general if you are feeding a wide variety of foods from a wide variety of sources most supplements are unecessary.  IB is a bit Supplement mad IMHO :D

The only things I would say are necessary are Fish Body Oil (NOT Cod Liver Oil) at 1000mg per day and, depending on the size of your dog, Vitamin E at between 200 - 400 iu per day.  The former is required because even when feeding raw because meat is grain fed your Omega 6/3 balance will be out of whack and the latter because Vit E has a synergistic effect with the FBO.  You can also feed Vit C to bowel tolerance.  I really would not worry about Vitamin B complex a eggs and chicken etc are rich in this.

Hi Linda, you should find the mucous will go after a short while & I don`t think it`s got anything to do with worms :)
For vitB you can give alfalfa & kelp powder but she should be getting enough with the varied diet. Just remembered, I whizz up banana, yoghurt & honey & sometimes a raw egg with it, for my lot & they adore it, that should clear up any discharge. I try to use foods instead of supplements & as I said I`ve recently cut down on them. These little hiccups will settle down soon :)
