Topic Dog Boards / General / E.U legislation to ban raw dog foods (locked)
- By tarasmum [gb] Date 04.12.03 23:09 UTC
Just read a posting on the britbarf site, about an article   that appeared in the dog world paper stating that the E.U now intend to ban the sale of raw meat for dogs unless it is tested weekly for enterobacteria, whatever that is.
The point is that not happy with interfering with our lives they now want to ruin our pets,my own two dogs have never been as healthy since being fed raw.
Yes we can buy from butchers but it will cost an arm and a leg and they definetly won,t be allowed to sell raw tripe.

I had heard that the raw food manufacturers would have to send weekly samples to be tested and when they invariably fail tests for the like of ecoli the whole batch has to be destroyed - and with no compensation the small companies providing tripe etc will soon go out of business.

It's just another head pickle when it comes to deciding what's best for the dogs

These are enterobacteria Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, Salmonella, Shigella, Proteus, Yersinia, Serratia.  There was a study started in 99 investigating how serious and where or if the transmission rates from cattle to human was via the food chain.

Generally for any of these bacilli to be found in the food chain the slaughter process and gutting has not been done correctly, many of them are in the digestive tract anyway but are not causing any clinical signs in the animals, ergo restuarants etc are supposed to have such strict hygiene regulations no cooked meats near the raw etc.  I would expect the concerns are more to do with the risks to humans than the dogs if these bacteria are present and we handle to tripe say and put our hands to our mouths before washing them properly,  the dogs systems are capable of dealing with these bugs after all they're present in their wild food.
