Hi
We have a 10 week old cavalier Bitch who we are now feeding on only IAMS puppy dried food (science diet) she has recently spotted a little of blood about 5 spots when she goes to the toilet .We have took her to the vet who gave us 3 tins of food for 3 days and then said go back to your normal diet with her .She also said that alot of new puppies do this but to me she seemed a new vet and a bit unsure ?? .I am basically asking if this is quite normal with puppies has anyone else experienced this .She is very fit no tempreture ,eating well, and very very lively anyone any ideas before i have to go back to the vet again if it carries on and waste more money ????.We arnt frightened of the vet bills by the way anything over £50 is insured for but could do with not going for a waste of time consultation fee if this is normal with new puppies.

Hi,
Yes, a lot of puppies will show blood in their stool once in a while. If this is all the time and/or her poos are very mushy or you see mucus then I would take her back to the vet. Puppy's digestion is very easily upset because of stress, excitement and the odd nasty bug that they may pick up on occassion. More and more dogs these days also seem to have chronic or frequent bouts of colitis.
As she is off her regular food anyway, you might want to consider switching to a different brand of food which would be better for sensitive tums. Burns for puppies (minibites) or Arden Grange or James Well Beloved - all of which are dry complete. Or Naturediet for puppies, which is a moist food. If you check the Feeding section you will see other recommendations.
