Hi.
Can i ask what is an alpha roll, and how is it used?

Thanks

Ps- i am NOT interested in using it on my dogs at all, as i heard it is bad, but i just want to know in what way. Thanks.

An Alpha roll is the act of flipping your dog onto his back and holding his throat.

And i happen to think that it is downright dangerous, by forcing a dog to submit in that way, you are litterally putting the fear of death into them, they think that you are trying to kill them, a lot of people get bitten trying to do this - the dog belives that that you are trying to kill them so they will try and defend themselves, doing this to an already dominant can increase the likelihood of aggression.  Doing this to an already submissive animal will increase the fear in the animal which will possibly lead to submissive urination and fear biting.
Hands should never ever be used to hurt an animal, and an alpha roll does just that, and its efficiency in asserting dominance is next to zero.

This is not some thing that should be done by a novice or on certain breeds, you would need a trainer to show you how it is done with calmness and in the correct manner, i wouldn,t do it with most breeds and i am a trainer and owner of large molosser breeds which i would not do it too.

The alpha roll is something that some trainers/owners believed happened in wild packs of dogs/wolves...The Monks of New Skete did a lot of damage in advocating this manouvre as a way to get dominance over your dog. They have now seen the error and have updated their training books to not include this.
Studies have found that the alpha roll is an appeasment ritual, instigated by the subordinate....you know, you walk passed your dog lying on the floor, he goes belly up, my own intact male does this all the time...not because he'd like belly rubs as looks would have you believe (though we do oblige him ;) ) but because he's letting us know we're higher in status than him.Totally voluntary!
When the dominant in the pack truly rolls the subordinate, the intent is to kill....hence owners who get badly bitten because they've brought out the defensive in their good old pets!
This is one training method that needs to stay in the wild and not in the home!
