Topic Dog Boards / Health / puppy poorly on Drontal
- By Debs435 [gb] Date 30.11.03 17:12 UTC
My 9 week old Gordon Setter has just been wormed again on Drontal puppy syrup on Thursday, and has had very runny poo ever since, sometimes blood tinged. Up until then he was fine on Pro Plan food, but since Thurs I've put him on boiled rice and chicken to try and help his stomach, but no change. He is fine in himself ( apart from Thurs night when he was very unhappy ) and full of beans, but this runny poo thing is worrying me, especially as it has gone on for so long. I now dont want to re-worm him with Drontal, but his breeder specifically said dont use Panacur as Gordons dont tolerate it. Advice please!!

Hi Debs - Although Drontal puppy syrup is very gentle, if you pup has had worms (apparently all pups are born with roundworms) then they can get diarrhoea/vomiting from being wormed. However, because your pups poo had blood in, I think it's especially important to get to the vets in case its parvo or something similar. Even fully vaccinated pups can get parvo, if they were vaccinated after they contracted it (ie had it before symptoms showed). Is you pup vaccinated? If so, when was it done? If these symptoms come before 10 days AFTER the 2nd vaccination it is possible for it to be parvo (and even in some cases after). There are many other illnesses that cause gastroenteritis though. I know in some areas there have been some nasty outbreaks of haemorrhagic gastroenteritis.

Thanks for your reply - he had his first jab nearly two weeks ago, and has been wormed regularly since he was born, but the breeder did say a few weeks ago that the whole litter had the runs, but dont know if it followed being wormed. He is totally happy in himself, and this morning his poo was almost normal, but lunchtime it was running out again, he isnt going anymore than normal but when he does it runs. Theres not loads of blood or anything, its just slight tinging, he is eating and drinking happily, if its still the same tomorrow, will take him, and sample of his poo to vets?? will go and give him his tea now and see what happens

Yeah Debs - does sound more like the worms theory - but if it carries on, get him in tomorrow. Better to be safe with the little 'uns :D
Good luck!
Kathy
