Whilst I am usually very happy whelping my bitches alone, this morning we had a little panic where a 2nd pair of hands would have been so useful. Cecilia started in active labour at about 9 am, and was ready to deliver 1st baby at 11. Unfortunately this was a big pup, arriving hind feet first, and she is a first time Mum - result, 1 stuck pup. Bag burst and feet visible! Absolutely no one around to give me a hand (no one even I could phone as all local friends at a show) near family all totally non- doggy. Ended up having to tuck Cecilia head and shoulders under my left arm whilst getting hold of pup with right. Firm pull deliverd pup succesfully, with Cecilia screaming blue murder and biting any bits of me she could get hold of (result 1 very saw arm and boob :(). All worth it in the end as we now have 4 gorgeous babes, and she just loves them. But perhaps we should add "An extra person" when we give newbies lists of whelping essentials?
bye
