Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Cocker Spaniel puppy - dropping of feeds
- By guest [gb] Date 29.11.01 14:45 UTC
My puppy is just 5 months old and is presently on 3 feeds a day. At what stage can you drop a feed. She has breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Is it best to drop breakfast or lunch and at what age?

Thanks for you help.

I would say Lunch, but you will find at some point that she loses enthusiasm for one o0f the meals. Normally I would say 6 months but let her guide you regarding this.

Hi

I agree with Brainless - we usually miss out the lunch-time meal with our Cocker pups at around the 5-6 month stage, often they let us know when they are ready for this by not finishing all of the 3 meals. Hopefully you got a diet sheet from your breeder which explains this so it might be worth you digging it out. I find our Cockers do best on 2 meals a day even as adults though some breeders do advocate just 1 meal a day once a dog reaches 12 months old.

Ditto what has been said. My two Cockers were onto two meals around the five month stage. As the youngest is still only 7 months old, they both have two meals a day and will carry on forever I think. Their breakfast is not a big affair - just a smallish sized meal. As my oldest dog has trouble kepeing weight on - a bit mad :D, I always feed more than they will eat. Then I know they are getting what they need. If they had an excess weight it would have to be different.
