Hi everybody
I mentioned a while ago I needed to do a project on H&S in order to gain my Diploma and the subject I have chosen is Violence towards Teachers in UK Schools .
Just need a bit of advice or guidance from anyone on Champdogs who works in the Education Sector ( even volunteers or trainee teachers)
Can you point me to any procedures/websites/policies in place to protect teachers and also how is violence dealt with in your school ? Is the majority of violence caused by parents or pupils themselves ? Do you work in a socially deprived area ? Do you feel you recieve adequate support fom your peers?
Do you have any stories to tell about violent instances ? All will be confidential dont worry ;)
Thanks all
Lesley

I think I replied to your earlier post about H & S, as a teacher I should be able to find you some info but am not back in school until Thursday - they've sent me on a bloody course - I dislike courses because it means someone else has to do my job whilst I am away.

Meanwhile you could try looking on the NUT and Nasuwt (?) websites - they might be some teacher based guidance for dealing with such incidents.

In my experience (working in an 'inner city' school) violence towards school staff can be from children or their parents.

Do you also need to consider events like Dunblane and the nursery attack (where Lisa Potts was so brave) - sorry can't remember where it happened. Certainly there are cases of attacks on school staff that are not related to education itself but where schools are (maybe) seen as a soft target!

Perhaps I should email you privately!

Thanks Steph - all help would be much appreciated :)
I have been on the Teacher Union Sites but havent had an indepth delve around as yet .
I have to present the idea to my tutor first to make sure its a viable option bfore I can start it -so just in the middle of gathering ideas at the moment .
Excellent idea about Lisa Potts - had not thought about her . Although I had thought about Philip Lawrence the murdered headmaster .
Are you given any training on how to deal with violent and abusive situations when eiher teacher training or when you start at a school ?
I have heard that the majority of schools dont keep statistics of incidences such as these although they are supposed to be RIDDOR reportable
Anyway you can mail me at mckyjo@aol.com :D
Thanks again
