Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Which wormer?????

I have a wonderful 9 week old Gordon Setter puppy who is due to be wormed again, his breeder reccomends Drontal, but I have read so many bad reports on here about it. She told me under no circumstances to use Panacur as Gordons dont tolerate it. My vets dont stock Drontal - olny Milbemax, I am totally confused and really dont know who best to listen to!!

Hello

You could try Panacur, its excellent, thats what i use on all my dogs.
Dean

Edited to say misread post:- i do use panacur, been told by my vet drontal isnt strong enough, but if we listened to what vets say, we wouldnt use anything on dogs at all, and we would get everything done that they recommend doing ;)

If the guests breeder said do not use Panacure on the pup then don't risk it. I use Dontrol Plus on my gang and only had a problem with one over the years. The one that had the problem was the dog I had who's immune system was effected as a result of another condition, he had Panacure granuals. May be wrong but don't think Panacure deals with tape worm, perhaps someone will let me know if it does as I have a good deal left.

Running on the end of this post. My vet has just given me a Drontal PLus pill to quarter and give to my puppies tomorrow. They will be 2 wks old. Not sure how to give a solid piece of pill to a pup that's not weaned.
We are thinking of crushing and giving them in a solution (milk or water) from a pipette. Sensible idea anyone?

I personally wouldnt give two week old pups dronatol tablets firstly 1/4 of a tablet is enough to worm 2 1/2 kg, am i correct in presuming your pups are terriers appoligies if i am not.if they are they almost certainly dont weigh that much.
It would be better to use either drontol puppy liquid or Panacur puppy Liquid measured acuratley and given with a oral suringe.

On the Bayer website, and in the Drontal Plus product notes they recommend worming pups at 2 weeks, then 4 wks, then 8 wks etc.
As for the size of the dose they recommend 1/4 pill for 'puppies' weighing 375g-750g. All my pups are above the 375g minimum. For a 2 1/2kg dog you would want 1 whole pill.
I have done my homework, and have no worries regarding the product I am using. I do however wish for some helpful advice with regard to administering a pill to an unweaned puppy.
I appreciate that a liquid formula would be easier to administer but my vet doesn't stock it, they're not into 'small animals' and i can't persuade them to stock it. I know the answer to that in the ideal world would be to find another vet, but in rural Ireland a 'small animal' vet is as rare as hens teeth. Finding one that will do anything for animals that don't 'moo' is a miracle in itself.
Thanks

I apologise for my previous reply to this post.  When I re-read the product information sheet, i was applying the small drontal pill dose rate whereas what my vet had given me was the medium pill!  Good job i re-read it with my sensible head on.  The saga continued.  I went back to my vets and they agreed that the pill would have been far too high a dose, and then they scratched their heads alot.  You see there is only ONE liquid wormer for dogs licensed for here, Parazol (sp?), and they cannot get hold of it.  If I wanted it I would have to travel to Dublin and find a more pet-orientated practise who 'might' stock it.
In the end we did some drastic maths calculations and and gave them some Panacur cattle drench (fenbendazol) at 1/4 ml each.
It was the best we could do under the circumstances, and seems to have done them no harm, and has hopefully done them some good (worm-wise).
Having discussed liquid puppy wormers at length with my vets and moaned (pointlessly) about the fact they are not licensed in this country. I have decided to stock up on my next visit to the UK.
As I say, sorry for being shirty before, i was so convinced I had the dose rate correct.  Your post woke me up and made me double check.  Thank you

You could always try natural wormers :) Along with natural foods they really work & I should know! I had 5 out of my 9 dogs fecal tested for worms & a few mths ago & all tested negative :D
First of all why worm with a chemichal treatment when you don`t even know if your dogs have them? Secondly, how do you know a natural wormer wont work if you never try it? :)

Hi Carolline, well being honest I`ve not had to use them! Since I started feeding my lot raw food over 2yrs ago now they haven`t had any worms, they`ve tested negative for them so I`ve not had to use anything :D But If I ever had to use anything it wouldn`t be the chemical ones it would be natural herbal ones. A lot of people use them with good success :) I do have another remedy using pumpkin seed but I`d have to send it you as attchment if you want.
You can get them from the link below & if you ask to speak to Stuart he`s very helpful.
