Topic Dog Boards / Health / Worming hand reared pups
- By LorraineB [gb] Date 28.11.01 22:40 UTC
Hi, we have now reached the milestone of 5 and a half weeks with our four hand reared pups that I have had so much support from everyone on the board about. Our vet has suggested worming them with Drontal, in view of the postings regarding the product and all the problems we have had with colic etc with the pups I am very reluctant to use it, any alternative advice please on products as I still have fingers and legs crossed re pups as one still has weak chest.

your help is very much appreciated

As an alternative - crushed up pumpkin seeds are said to do the trick - not sure in what quantity though....I agree I am worried by worming products - particularly with such tiny puppies - let us know which product you decide to use.

Thaqnks, will contact Pfizer I think to see what alternatives they suggest - pups are at best at moment and I am terrified of putting them back

An interesting alternative Norm! and presumably you would see the results of the seeds having worked ie. dead worms whereas I think Drontal is one of those wormers where the worms are disintegrated.

I have to say that I get a peverse pleasure in seeing evidence after worming!

Rachael,

I have to say the best evidence of worming I saw which was especially peverse was when someone emptied a tin of spaghetti into some horse droppings belonging to a very neurotic horse owner - the results were spectacular !! sorry not much to do with dogs - I don t know whether I d try the pumpkin seeds as Akitas are pretty peculiar anyway but will maybe consult Pfizer or some such - will advise their reply

regards & thanks

lorraine I would be terrified to advise on worming. I can only tell you what I used ,it was strongid paste, it was very goodindeed ,Im not sure if you can still get it in england as it is not on sale in ireland now. something to do with import duty,as usual when you find something good it disappears .but what i can say once you have wormed them garlic keeps them free of worms for longer, and it is good for the immune system best wishes for the puppies its a hard job i handreared 9 bullmastiffsnearly 3 yrs ago and chuckling Im still not over it . mari

Hi, I took a bitch to be mated the other day and was talking to the stud dog owner, long ties are a great oportunity to pick people's brains!!! I mentioned my concerns about the 2 top brand wormers and he said he has had problems too but for the last couple of years has used Strongid paste on small puppies- from 3 weeks - and has been very pleased with the results. I order my wormers from www.vet-medic.co.uk - very good value, they are cheaper than any of my local vets and deliver within a couple of days. I am fairly sure they have Strongid paste and will use it on my next litter if she has "held".

thank you so much. I will get on to it, to find out if they will send some .but if not I can get a friend to post some over as I said in my last post its to do with import laws or such. mari

Many thanks Mari,

will look for Strongdid, have used on my horses and never had problem, pups are great at moment but will not stay in pen, they prefer to spread out over kitchen floor ! wonderful when u are cooking ! have to go for eye tests next Tuesday and then hopefully can think about letting them go after Xmas, so very much attached to them though as have breathed every breath for them when they were ill ! one will stay as I can see her mums eyes and expression when she looks at me and strangely enough she likes sleeping in mums favourite position by door.

regards

Lorraine ( very emotional again as usual when I think of mum)

Lorraine you have put in more time and effort than some people would have. You have been rewarded by saving her pups and that is something you should feel very proud of.

Hello again now having been in the same boat as you I know how you feel. I do not like giving the really strong wormers to young puppies so wormed mine on sherleys syrup{chocolate flavour} it only does roundworms but unless the pups are kept outside or in contact with other dogs then they shouldn't get roundworms yet . I wormed them at 3 and 5weeks on this and will use a slighty stronger wormer {panacur granules} when they are 7.5 weeks
I hope you find a wormer that you are happy with asw I know it is a real worries with ti y babies emma xx.

Many thanks yet again for all the kind words, thoughts and advice (says she with a tear in each eye). We had two days when they were two weeks old when the vet had them, two on drips overnight and the other two given fluid by injection, she took them home with her and when we got them back it was 50,50 if they would pull through - amazingly they are all now running round wrecking the house, at least Willow will now live on as u say but she is very much conspicuous by her absence. On a lighter note my local off licence must have made a fortune on the amount of Vodka I ve gone through !!
