Topic Dog Boards / Health / Bald patches HELP!!

Hello, everybody!

Here's a little query for you, can anybody help? My black lab male is 6 years old, adopted from my mother. She has kept his collar on from puppyhood to when he took over ownership of me! It was a 'choke' chain type collar, and he has a bald 'line' around his neck. Since he has been with me, I make sure he doesn't wear his collar unless out on a walk.

Is there anything we can do about this, or is he doomed to have a bald patch forever??

Thanks!
Caz

I would get him a nice rolled leather collar, or for more control a rolled leather Half slip/choke collar. I don't know if it is allowed to mention ccompanies names, but you can get one mail order from 'Luxway Canine supplies' they may have a Website or someone may have the address to give you. If you can possibly make the LKA ch show on 8th December at the NEC, it will be Gundog, Hound and terrier day, the trade stand will be there, and of course so will lots of Labradors and their owners and breeders!

I use this type of collar on my Elkhounds all the time, and it doesn't ruin their coat! The fur should grow back, especially with the half slip which will sit loosely when not attached to a lead and drawn to the width of the dogs neck.

You will need to measure the narrowes part of his neck, the collar size is based on this, and are sold as 14 inch 6 inch etc. My Elkhounds have 14inch ones.

Yup, the hair will eventually grow back - good on you for discarding the chain check collar. In my opinion these should never be used as a permanent collar on a dog and should only be used under expert supervision for training purposes.

A rolled leather collar is an excellent type to help cut down on that ridge you get with some other types. I often remove my dogs collars in the evening and give their necks a good rub - usually goes down well !

Superb, I'll try him on a rolled collar then! Do you think that the fur will grow back - he has had the collar on 24/7 for 6 years!? Poor thing... we have also been giving him some oil-type thing in his food (can't remember what it is, but it's for his coat:) )

Hi,

Don,t know if it will help but if you find your local saddlery company there is a product called Cornecrescine which is used on horses for hoof growth and is also recommended for promoting hair growth where there has been a loss through injury or rubbing. It might be worth a try and it certainly smells quite nice, another old horse remedy is goose grease it produces fantastic coat but is very slimy when using!

cheers Lorraine

Does your SBT lay in the "spinx" position and are the bald patches where she is touching the ground or somewhere different?
