I recently got a doberman from rescue (4 years old). She was absolutely gorgeous apart from the fact that she hated cats (I had two) and she hated other dogs - on/off leads, particularly bitches, as I later found out she had been attacked as a pup. Eventually, it became too much for me and I had to give her back to Doberman rescue for them to carry out a proper evaluation and find her a home that was cat free and to have owners that had more time and less possibilities of meetin other dogs.

I feel extremely let down and very very sad about the experience and wonder if it was my inability to look after the dog and whether or not I should even contemplate getting another one from a pup. I was taking her to obedience classes but from what I gathered from talking to the breeders and the rescue people, she had had a long history of problems.

I would desparately like to have a dog. I have a fully enclosed garden and although work full time, I can make the necessary arrangements to have someone come in and let the dog out in the garden during the day. I am just not sure if this is fair on the animal as essentially it would be a house dog and would be alone much of the time. Is this unfair to the animal if the time it would have with us would be quality time and it would be in a home that desparately wanted a dog and would love and care for it as a child?

Hello good for you for trying i am a dobe lover myself sadly there are dobes that have some problems,i am a housewife and spend alot of time training my 2 myself to the best of my ability.
was it a dobe u wanted or any dog? Dobes like company and if left on their own can be destructive, noisey etc . I like dobes for what they are and have had no problems with socializing mine most dogs around me are friendly ,i would have another go if you say your time would be quality time and good luck.

Hi Guest

I did a long, delicately worded reply and then had a power cut and lost it and now I don't seem to be able to stay on line long so will make it brief.

I don't think that Dobermann puppies should be left alone for more than a few hours, on an irregular basis, - they are very active, intellegent and will soon rearrange a home if bored and keeping constantly crated is, IMHO, cruel. Also if you are not there you can't train and socialise them

Not everyone gets what they want, when they want (or even ever) and we should accept this and think what is best for a dog rather than our own needs. I only had to wait thirteen years for my first Dobe but it was well worth the wait, especially as they become so addictive.
