Hi I have a black lab pup he is now 4 1/2 months old I was just wondering how long he should be on puppy food for. The vet said not to change over untill he is 12 months is this right??

Peoples opinions may differ but I always change mine over to adult food and skip junior food on or around five to six months old.

What do you have him on at the moment ?

Hi guys-
The problem that can arise if you feed a puppy on high protein pup food until 12 months plus, is that their muscles bulk up alot faster than their bone structure. (For instance, most giant breeds are put on adult food very early so that they grow muscle and bone at the same rate). My lab pup is now 6 1/2 months old and I'm going to change him over any time now (should have really done it before now, but couldn't make up my mind about which adult food!), and he'll go straight onto adult food, not junior. It may take him slightly longer to finish his growing, but it won't put undue pressure on his skeleton. For a breed that can be so prone to skeletal and joint problems, I would rather take the longer, slower, SAFER route.
Anyway, enjoy your pup
Ali :)
