We will be collecting our border collie pup in a few weeks,I know I shall be given a diet sheet and some food to carry us through the first few days, but the breeder feeds her pups on a mix of dried food only.Would you advise that we keep to this or do you recommend a bit of meat in the diet, introduced gradually.
Our previous collie x was fed on a mix of veggies.meat and mixer and she was a generally healthy dog,who sadly passed away with 'old age' at 14 in August.
When we had our first dog as a puppy there was not the variety of balanced dried foods available then,so any advice would be appreciated.
Also if you would recommend introducing some meat at what age do you think we should begin this?
For treats our dog always had raw veg.i.e. carrot mainly,so would this be suitable to give to a teething puppy?
oh so many questions and she is not even with us yet :)
thankyou

Hi Jacqueline

Here's my thoughts, for what they are worth :) You could have a chat with the breeder and ask them about the food they are recommending, what it is, why they use it etc. You could then do a search on CD's for the type of food and see if there is any discussion about it, good or bad. If you do decide to change the food, you should do it over a period of time so as not to upset pup's digestion.

Feeding is an area where there are a wide range of opinions, so it can seem a bit of a minefield, but there's loads on CD which might help you make sense of it all :)

Good luck with your new puppy when you get her!

Feed your dog what suits it and you. Raw Meat can be introduced on Day 1;after all it is what they are weaned onto in the wild. Raw carrots are excellent for teething puppies; however they don't tend to last long! :)
