Hi guys and gals .Had my 18 month old staffy spayed today after asking for advice on this forum and thankyou all for your help .can someone out there help me again please!!!!! the vet said we shouldnt notice any weight gain and shouldnt cut her food down ,but i thought bitches gained weight after being spayed , basically will or wont she gain weight or is there any way i can help her keep her fit muscular physique.thanks.

It depends on the individual bitch.
If you feed meat and biscuit diet and feel she's getting a little 'porky'
just cut the biscuit down or up her exercise. The same if she's fed a complete diet, you can either go the
'light' version or just reduce the amount fed of her normal diet.
If she's getting the same amount of exercise I shouldn't think you'd have too much of a problem.

Hi,
The only spayed bitch I have had (and I have had 4) who put on weight after spaying was the one who had previously had pups. The maiden bitches never gained an ounce.

Thanks jeangenie & boxacrazy, she is fed on a complete biscuit meal, and i certainly wont cut down on her exercise as she enjoys it to much.Just got to wait now until she is over the operation. Thanks again.

which vet was it u saw because i always thought the same that they do put on weight as once the bitch has been spayed her metabolism slows down greatly and you should feed her alot less and still give her alot of exercise i work in a vet my self and any one who does get there dog or bitch spayed is advised to put them on a much lower quantity of food
had a lab bitch spayed shed never been mated and she became enormous i also have her brother who isnt castrated and he is bigger but thinner than her and she gets about a drinking glass of dry food a day where the boy gets 2.5 and is just right for a dog that is partly why i am very reluctant to get my gsd bitch spayed
think that it is the same with all breeds of dogs especially staffs (even cats)

does any one have any other opinions on this please say as i am not sure of ur dogs current build or amount of exercise it gets

thanks robert

Hi, I've had 2 Stafford Bitches spayed & neither of them put any weight on, They were both very fit before the op so maybe that had something to do with it. They also got over the op quickly without any problems at all.

Thanks for the help. You guys and gals out there are all stars.just one more question!!! she hasnt had anything to eat or drink since thurs night,is this normal or should i contact vet.she has perked up a bit,but worrying me,dont want her to get de-hydrated,any advice most welcome.

She should be drinking by now. See if you can persuade her to drink. Try a little kiddology by just colouring the water with milk. If she doesn't drink fairly soon I would contact the vet, just to be safe.

How's she recovering now?

It's actually heartwarming to hear of someone having their staffy spayed instead of trying to make a few quid out of her :D

Well done for knowing what's right for your bitch!
