I have just had a quote from a vet to scan my bitch 97.50p, is this a record I wonder, seems well over the top!! I am in south east london if anyone can recommend somewhere Thanks :)

I don't believe in scans at all. Your vet will be able to tell you by pulpating your bitch between 28-32 days to confirm a pregnancy. Scans are very inaccurate and there is a small risk that it can cause the bitch to abort.

Good luck

annieandchloe, what facts do you have to suggest scanning is a possible cause of abortion? Humans are scanned using the same equipment. Soundwaves are what is used in ultrasound & have been proved to be safe. :)

it costs me around £30 for a scan--and never had any problems ,

There is more risk of abortion thru palpation than scanning. I have mine scanned at 30 days, costs £15 if the bitch is empty and £16 if she's got pups, the woman scanning mine got it right this time 4 scanned and 4 whelped with no problems.

Mollygog she's in North Shropshire about 2 miles from me and very experienced in both dogs and mini horses. She scans, does a mating swab to see when a bitch is ready and she'll even tell you if it's a good season or not, or if there is any infection, always take bitches that come to me to her for a pre mating swab if nothing else I get to know if she's got an infection or not.

the Lady that i use live about 9 miles away and she only charges £10, she is not a vet but has worked at the vets, she has the scanner at home for her own use

I palpalated my own bitch and never had a problem, I even knew how many pups she was having. I think it just depends on the dog and how comfy they are, you just have to be very careful and no what you are doing :)
