Hi,
I've just watched a 1/2 hour special programme ('Breed all about it' on Animal Planet on Cable telly)on the Great Dane. Lovely stories, history etc, but they said at the end that there was a new colour to be introduced soon- Black and white markings like a dutch rabbit, can't remember the correct name:). I just wondered if this colour had been introduced. It was originally an American program, so I guess that maybe its only recognised in the States. I'm only being nosy, but i'm sure that someone 'Daney' is out there that can help.
Cheers chaps
Ali :)

Hi - it was probably the colouring known as "mantle" or "boston black". A black dane with a white chest, white socks, and the white up to and on the face. Its a colour that can be found over here, but is not KC recognised as yet :)
The only other black & white colouring is Harlequin - which is KC recognised - and is a white base with black markings. These pups can be very expensive (£2-3K) and can suffer from a fair few health problems.
Take a look at
this page as it has pretty much every colour on. I got my blue dane from this breeder.
HTH :)
I just had a peek at that site Chloe, I couldn't believe the size of the pups at 2 weeks old! I have just had some pics through of our 4 week old Cattle Dog and they are probably only a third of the size, and were those 12 (?) pups all from the same litter, the dam must have been huuuuge!

Sharon it was really good, it had Jill Swedlow in it with her 4 fawn danes, a lady who uses her's in films, an athlete with a boston(i think) and the cartoon writer for Marmaduke. Amongst other things.
It was lovely to watch (apart from ear taping/cropping lol)

The actual colour in the standard is Mantle, they dont call it Boston Black. I always watch breed all about it, its what first pushed me to get a French Bulldog. Its really informative. Some of the Danes were very good looking, you would have thought the women who had four all fawns would have had a vary in colour although i have to say i like fawns best.

I always watch that programme if I can and made a special effort to see the Dane one yesterday :D
I love the Blues myself but that black with white markings was a stunner... by the time I get one they might well be recognised - lol!
Thought the pup with his cropped ears taped to poly cups was v funny but still prefer them natural :D

I try to catch it most nights. Havent seen them do the Elkhound yet.
With 2 a night they get through most breeds.

Like I said - its known as either mantle or boston black over here. I'm not so keen on fawns, I'd say they are my least favourite :) Mine is blue, harlie and brindle, then straight black.

The breed all about it show is very good, Im pretty sure i saw one a few years back on the American Pit Bull but it could have easily been another show, has anyone seen the one about English Bulldogs, i saw it a few weeks back and was dissapointed, it was advertised as the English Bulldog then they rambled on for 20 minutes about Am Bulls and a brief bit about our Bulldog, the frenchie one however was excellent. Did anyone see it tonight on Foxhounds and Cavalier's, they were both good but why when they talk about Cavies do they ALWAYS use blenheims, i know its the most common but the other three colours especially Ruby often get little attention.

The Foxhounds one was really interesting and raised the valid point of what will happen to these dogs if hunting is banned?
I'd never realised what good looking animals they were until I saw the programme.
Have I missed the one about SBT's yet? The Bull Terrier one is on next Wenesday at 4 ;)

Im afraid a SBT one hasent been made yet, i think this is probably down to them being not a breed that is particually popular in America, i mean their not in their top 50 breeds, plus they have the Am Staff in US which probably gets alot more recognition over the staffie. I have a friend who has all the breed all about it shows on tape and he says a SBT one hasent come yet.
Sad i know, id love to see what they said about the fab SBT. Ive seen the bull terrier before, its excellent, they talk briefly about Pit Bulls.
