I have a two year old labrador (Male) that was taken ill last monday, sickness and diarhoea, which was worse on tuesday and by wednesday he was at the vets where he has been since. He has had blood tests which show nothing abnormal, kidneys and liver are working well. He then had an xray which showed nothing abnormal also. Since then he has been on drips, he is sick every time they remove the anti sickness drugs, hasn't eaten since last monday and is looking terrible,as you would expect. The vets cannot understand why he is not responding to the drugs, he seemed much better yesterday and so they gave him a very small amount of food which he vomited a few hours later. Today he is still very lethargic and is not at all interested in life. Has anyone any ideas of how we can help him? He was a fit, healthy dog before last week, and no he has not recently had any vacinations.

Has your vet ruled out any poisons/toxins that may have got into the dog's system? Sounds more serious than 'something he ate'.

My GWP had these symptoms October last year. She was initially diagnosed with Gastro Enteritis. She did not respond to antiboitics and had x rays, blood tests, etc. She got worse and worse. She was on anti emetic injections and pain killing injections every day. After a week I took a poo sample in and asked for it to be 'grown'. The diagnosis was E coli. She was on a superbug antibiotic and anti emetic and pain killing injections for a month, but did recover. Take a sample in for growing to ckeck it isnt E coli but do it quickly. If my bitch hadnt been so young and fit, the outcome would have been worse. She was left with colitis, bowel and stomach and throat infection and a cyst on her teat. Glad to say one year on she is fit and well.

Have seen this in dogs who are chewers and seem to swalow all sorts of stuff. Anything from pieces of toys to bits of wood and stones. Over time it can damage the lining of the intestines and the two sides can stick together. Not saying this is so with your dog but if at any time your dog has had this habit make sure your vet. knows. JH

Hi I had the same thing two years ago with a10 month male Weimaraner he came down with a stomache bug the vet gave him antibiotics but he got worse and had to be admitted and put on a drip all the usuall tests and x rays where done turned out he was allergic to the antibiotics so instead of making him better they made him a good deal worse they stopped all medication for 24 hours and then restartd the antibiotics immediatly the vomitting got worse again so they just kept him on the drip for a further 36 hours and he improved kept some food down and the next day i took him home where he made a speedy recovery
