I've read a few posts advocating the morning after jab and I wonder how many people are aware of the very real side affects of this...firstly it often fails to work and the resulting litter can be affected , even if it does work the bitch can (and they often do) end up having a pyometra brought on by the jab. Unless you're planning on breeding the bitch later it's much better to have her spayed and the foetus removed.

How do you know that the injection brings on pyometra?

hi madmax....they have more or less quit using that type mismate shot over here...your right it can and does cause pyo.....the new protocol involves using lutalyse or cabergoline at 30-35.days ..though i don't know anyone who even does that

Anwen , because firstly I know people it has happened too, my friend is a veterinary nurse and my own vet told me earlier this year , a lot of vets don't unless you ask, but then there's a load of things they don't tell you!

I've never heard of the Pyo risk link before, but I have never used it successfully. The two occasions i've used it i have received a single puppy....both times by caesarean. A very expensive injection, but two absolutely delightful pups with no health problems, just huge size at birth!

I've used the jab once with a bitch who had no pups or health problems related to the jab, first one was give on day 3 after mating and the 2nd on day 5. This bitch went on to have a perfectly healthy litter of 5 pups a yr later no problems at all.

Nothing is without risk. I am sure the same risks apply to Human morning after contraception. It is a case of weighing up the risks. I too would advise spaying for preference if this is an option (no future breeding plans).
From what I have read the greatest risks of Pyometra are associated with the jab being given at the end of a bitch's seson, for those caught at the tail end.
Still I suppose Pregnancy is not without dangers.

I have only ever used the jab on two occasions for miss matings and it failed twice.
