Topic Dog Boards / General / Dogs abandoned in property
- By bulldogowner [gb] Date 09.11.03 20:49 UTC
Hello

It has been brought to my attention tonight that nearby to where i live there are three dogs that have been abandoned in a property, i have been over tonight to drop some food for them through the letter box, and i did peek through (the nosey being that i am) to see if i could see the condition the dogs are in, they seem fine although a little on the thin side, i came back to inform the RSPCA and they said they will go and check it out sometime in the morning, although they did make it clear that the dogs probably would not be siezed for 7 days, i did knock the houses next door and spoke to the one couple and going on what they said the dogs have been alone there since thursday, i asked why they never reported it and they said that they did, but as yet no one but myself has been around to the property.
I will be calling other local animal charities in the morning to see what can be done, as the above named are clearly not that bothered, i dont condone breaking the law (i did once and it got me nowhere, although we did manage to get to the dog). has anyone any other ideas? i have called the police and they have told me to contact the RSPCA and the local dog warden, and also the local authority as it is a council house, obviously the people that lived there have done a moonlight and not even took the dogs into consideration, i could see that the dogs have ripped up rubbish in the hallway of the property as it was everywhere and the smell did hit me as i looked through the letterbox, so they have obviously been there for a few days without interaction from anyone.
So any other animal charities that might take an intrest into helping these dogs? i will also phone the local press in the morning,to see if it will put a rocket up the RSPCA`s backside into getting something done.

I hate to say this Dean but I think contacting the local press is a good way to go. You should be able to get something moving then. But other than that I don't thinK they will move. Ask the neighbours who they reported it too and when. That will count as at least from Friday then.

It makes me mad, i thought the RSPCA where there to help animals, by the time they do anything the animals will be in a right state,

Bearing in mind the problems you had with RSPCA last time, I wouldn't hold out much hope for help in THAT direction - but phone the local authority - get the no of the local Dog Warden - the contact either a local TV station or - possibly try & contact the producers of the BBC series LIFE OF GRIME - they often have bits about the dog wardens.

Hope you can get some help on this Dean!

Hello

I didnt really want to call the RSPCA after what happened last time, but in a way i felt forced into a corner as help needs to be given to these dogs, and soon hopefully.
The general state of the place from inside didnt look good after what i managed to see through the letter box, even though its cold the smell hit me as soon as i opened it and i could see droppings in the hallway and there was also rubbish everywhere.
So as soon as i get up in the morning i will be on the phone to anyone that will listen, i would like to see the dogs removed from the place sometime tomorrow, though as far as the rspca are concerned i dont think that will happen.
But fingers crossed someone will do something, or at least force the rspca to act.

Hello,

Good old RSPCA again!

Why does this not surprise me!! I was at the vets last week, with my old Goldie, and a girl came in with a Swan, well a cygnet actually, from one our local parks (she worked there I think), obviously it must have been injured, but they'd phoned the RSPCA, who were totaly uninterested, and told them to take it to the Vet. :( Does anyone know if they actualy do anything unless there's a TV camera around

In your place I would be tempted to say i thought i may have heard a child crying in the property...once that is said they would have to break in....
- By porkie [gb] Date 10.11.03 07:01 UTC
Have you contacted any local vets? They may offer some kind of assistance or even pressure the animal rescue centres, after all if these poor dogs are left much longer they will end up in a vet's care.

I feel I have to defend the RSPCA you've all obviously had bad experiences with them but living on the coast I've called them dozens of times about injured sea birds and they have always responded very quickly.

Thanks
Steve

that may be so pinarello...but how can anyone justify taking no action about dogs locked in a house with no food? regardless of previous experience, surely most people would be shocked if they knew the rspca would allow that?
- By pinarello [gb] Date 10.11.03 13:51 UTC
No of course your right it can't be justified in any way and sorry if it sounded that way its just I've had nothing but good experiences guess I've just been lucky or some centres are better than others, just didn't think they should all be tarred with the same brush.

Thanks
Steve

Hello

They should all be tarred with same brush, as the emergency number i belive is the same for everyone, every call made to them goes through the same switch board, i am lead to belive.

Hello

I wouldnt defend the rspca if my life depended on it, were talking about living breathing animals that have been left dumped in a property with no food or water, how can you justify the rspcas actions for not responding to my call last night? This is not the first time i have had dealings with them! Me and my wife rescued a BC that had been dumped (by our nieghbour) in a dog crate to have her puppies, we listened to endless screaming and crying from the dog most of the afternoon, and when we managed to look over the fence we were so shocked, some of the pups were clearly dead, two survived. The BC was old and crippled with atheritis we called the rspca, and because we were seen to be helping the dog and we had called a vet out to assist giving the old girl some treatment, and a bit of good old tlc, they were not intrested, now say for instance we hadnt room for another dog? or her puppies? would that have meaned that the dog would have had to stayed with our nieghbour indefinately? or until something killed her?
Now i wonder if i had invited a camera crew down for the day to film what had gone on, would they have turned up then?, the answer to that is almost certainly, because if they are seen to be doing good deeds for the very thing they are there for, people give them money! and lots of it !

Update

I have had a call from the council this morning and they were made aware by another member of the public this morning that the dogs have been left abandoned in the property, they are meeting up with the dog warden at 2:30 to get the dogs removed from the property, i have said i will attend to give the dog warden a hand, and for my own peace of mind that the dogs are out of there.

excellent news bulldogowner - and well done for persisting - so many people would just make the phone call and leave it at that (not from here I hasten to add!)

Hi Dean we must have posted our last posts at exactly the same time I'm really really shocked by what you described I know someone who works for the rspca who drinks in our local and will talk to them tonight about your experiences. The reason I'm so suprised is because I cycle to work in the mornings and very often come accross birds trapped or injured by fishing lines and I must have phoned a dozen times at least this year and they have always arrived within half an hour, reading your accounts I'm starting to wonder whether their picking and choosing cases after all it is very easy to put a bird in a box and drive away.

Cheers

Hello Dean, just wondering how you got on?
Been following this awful tale!

The most horrific act of animal cruelty I have ever witnessed was a 'gang' of teenagers beating a donkey to death with beer bottles. I phoned the police - who said it would take them a while to get there but as it was animal related phone the rspca. The rspca said it was people doing the damage phone the police. :(

I ended up taking my own loyal girl over the field with me and shouting at them until they walked away (after thowing a fair amount of abuse my way). It was too late for the poor animal and she died there with me beside her.

The police turned up that afternoon and took descriptions etc but nothing ever came of it. The rspca didn't come until nearly a week later (and several phonecalls). They said that they couldn't remove the animal as she wasn't neglected - just dead. The horses and other donkeys in the feild were only fed about once a week so it lay there until the owners discovered it and towed it away.

I've heard so many tales about the rspca I refuse to donate to them or to take a dog from them... afterall they use a considerable amount of that money putting healthy animals to sleep.

Support the Dogs Trust (NCDL) or local animal rescues.

Well done you bulldogowner.

Did they get out ok? are they being looked after? are the owners going to be found and left alone with no food and filthy conditions (should be)!!

Dean,

Please don't tell us you took them all home with you?

The quickest way to get a responce and if you know a amimal has been left in a council flat/house is to ring the council first. (It helps to say you hear distruction inside going on too!) They'll be the first and quickest to respond as it is council property and they don't want the big bill's to clean up a damaged place. System sucks, but there it is.
