ok im very confused i always thought that lab pup couldnt have more than 25% protein in their food, am i wrong??

They can have just about anything but whether it's desirable is a different matter. I use a 21% food for Anna for most of the year but up it to 25% during the working season. For a non working Labrador I would stick to something around 21% protein.

thanks john, people have such different opinions on puppy food, i dont know what to follow!
at present i have my pup of skinners puppy growth, protein 28%, but recently my friend told me that protein shouldnt be above 24%, something to do with high protein promoting rapid growth.

many thanks

Gemma,
My bitch Isla, who's 5 1/2 yrs is on about 21 % protein for most of the time now. When she was trialling, she used to go up to about 24 %. My pup Kester, is on about 23% (approx) a the moment but eventually will be on the same food as Isla. (Although hopefully in not such huge amounts!:) )The other problem that you can have with a pup getting too much protein is that they act like kids having E-numbers. Way back in the stone age when I first got Isla, she must have been on about 28 % protein until I did a load of reading about nutrition. She used to 'bounce off the walls', it was like she was 'wired' all the time, poor thing. Anyway I'm wiser (and a lot older:) ) now and she forgave me years ago, but I'll not make the mistake again.
Enjoy
Ali :)

Hello,

I also find this confusing. Our 11 month Goldie is now on only 18% Protein. A senior dog diet, which seems to be the only food we can find to keep the sloppy poo's and terrible wind at bay. However, our 4 month old terrier is on nearly 30% protein from a highly recommended puppy food.
Surely this is too high!! She had a runny tummy for the first time tonight and has gone off her food very slightly too!

i also have a terrier, who is on naturediet, naturediet is great for digestive problem, my terrier like your goldie used to have runny tummy all the time, and wind, but since switching to naturediet, he has improved so much, they do a puppy version aswell as an adult. very good stuff.

the lower the protein lower the oils ares which dogs need for good coat and joints, mine are on 27% with a high oil contin, plus high the protein the less you feed, the lower protine the more you feed.so it just not reading the protein levals it the oether that go with it to make up the product, plus if you look at the indergents and the word is ceral that the most that product has got as a main indergent,if it a meat food first that the main indergent which is better than a ceral,so look at the whole thing not just protein,

Just because meat is listed first does NOT mean that it is the MAIN ingredient; only the single largest ingredient; when you add up all the other cereals and forms of cereal you will probably find that over 50% of the content is made up of cereal.

Oil can be added to the food such as Fish Body Oils, Cod Liver Oil etc yourself.

It is not the amount of protein but the useable amount of protein that is important.
